Should I go flatscreen or stay CRT?

My current monitor is going out and I want to get a replacement. I am either going to get a 21" Sony CRT monitor or a 19" Flatpanel.

In Order of importance I need

1) Large viewable area
2) Extremely easy to stare at for long periods
3) Good for high fps gaming

Also when flatpanels are quoted as 19" or whatever is that viewable as well, or no?

So what should I get?

I'm a CRT man myself *insert manly grunt here* if you're gonna be gaming on it, stick with a CRT 🙂
 
Simple, if you have the cash, get one of the good 19" lcds that has a good response time so there is no streaking. Otherwise, if you can't afford those lcds, buy the CRT.


I have a sgi 1600sw myself, and it works great! ALthough the 1600x1024 native resolution isn't supported by many games.
 
Get a flat panel only if the response time is less than 25 ms. Any longer, and you'll have lots of streaking in your games. The good flatpanels tend to be expensive, though.

There's a great place in Hot Deals to find 21" CRTs for about $200.
 
I have a 20" Dell flat panel 2000FP, which runs native at 1600x1200. I got this to replace a trinitron 21" monitor and I think it is one of the best purchases I've ever made. Games run just fine with it.

wat are other specs that i should look at to see if the lcd is good

I think LCD's have come a LONG way in the past few years. I have a CTX 15inch LCD that I never see streaking. I don't know if I am just blind but I have never had a problem with it in games.

EDIT: Of course this is at the native resolution. I have seen problems if I start playing games at non-native resolutions on my LCD. I am pretty much suck to 1024x768 for gaming.
 
How come my laptop panel runs at like 1600x1200 and all other 15inch lcd's I see run at 1024x768. Just better technology?

Contrast ratio is nice. The smaller the fraction (1/1000 contrast), the better the display. Dot pitch is of course important. For CRTs I don't want anything higher than .25

But the response time is the main thing. Go out to some computer stores, take a look at some LCD displays, and decide which ones you like the best.

Personally, I don't think refresh rate is quite as important on an LCD screen to me as it is on a CRT. My eyes just don't ache looking at an LCD, but if I'm using a CRT, I need the refresh rate to be at least 85 Hz at whatever resolution I'll be using.

Laptop LCDs aren't very much like LCDs for desktops. Not the same technology. I seriously doubt you could play games on a laptop LCD.

As for resolution. I have seen LCD's that go up to higher than 1600x1200. It just depends on how much you want to pay. Most 15inch LCDs are only going to run at the highest of 1024x768 where most 17inch LCDs top out at 1280x1024. it just costs a lot more on lcds for higher resolutions

 
I think LCD's are ideal for college students. I hate hauling my 17" monitor back and forth between college and home, even though I only do it once a year. Actually, I don't have an LCD right now, but I'm going to buy one once I have enough cash.
 
If u can find a good sized LCD w/ a nice response time and can afford it...by all means go for it. Otherwise a good CRT is fine for ya...
 
if you play games a lot there is no point in getting a flatscreen as they are quite inferior to crts.

and yes, you can play games on laptop LCD's.

hm... thier is no way i'd trade in my 27" tv for anything less than another 27" tv. I could care less if i lose my CRT though.. i really want an LCD

who had the sgi?
I am having problems getting my geforce3 running at 1600x1024.
The geforce3 drivers on the XP cd will work and so will elsa drivers but thats it.
It worked fine on my matrox card though.
