Should I feed the cats?

Feed and water them. You've agreed that they are allowed to live under your roof and are therefore also your responsibility. At the very least, you are preventing them from being (more) annoying.

Also, leave a note for your roommate detailing when and how much you watered and fed them.

A day without food isn't abuse - she feeds them too much at twice a day - but yes... if she has abandoned them - I agree the OP is responsible for them - then I advise to take them to the pound... which I suppose would be considered cruel to do by many...

I'm not saying 1 day is abuse, surely it isn't. I'm saying there's 0 reason for it to even approach it whatever the line is. Would you want to answer this question: why didn't you feed them when you suspected they weren't being fed?

I wouldn't put myself in that situation.

1-2 times a day is normal for adult cats, so 2 is not "too much".

Most cats self regulate their eating. We've always left food out for our cats 24/7 and have never had one be overweight.

I think that with both, it all depends on how they were raised.

my parents dog is free-fed. they leave dry food out in a bowl all day and he eats when he wants to... he puts on a couple pounds every winter when walks become less frequent but otherwise manages his own weight fine.

My cat used to be fat, but fiancee started feeding her instead and measuring specific amounts, and going with wet food in the mix... now she is still heavy, but, she as lost a good 20% or so of her bodyweight... she is like 15 years old, and loves to jump up onto the back of the recliner ....
