Should I feed the cats?

  • Yes, have a heart about it and feed them.

  • No, they're not your problem and they can manage without food for a day

  • F*** you, Pete, F*** you, seriously.

Feed and water them. You've agreed that they are allowed to live under your roof and are therefore also your responsibility. At the very least, you are preventing them from being (more) annoying.

Also, leave a note for your roommate detailing when and how much you watered and fed them.

A day without food isn't abuse - she feeds them too much at twice a day - but yes... if she has abandoned them - I agree the OP is responsible for them - then I advise to take them to the pound... which I suppose would be considered cruel to do by many...
I'm not saying 1 day is abuse, surely it isn't. I'm saying there's 0 reason for it to even approach it whatever the line is. Would you want to answer this question: why didn't you feed them when you suspected they weren't being fed?

I wouldn't put myself in that situation.

1-2 times a day is normal for adult cats, so 2 is not "too much".

Most cats self regulate their eating. We've always left food out for our cats 24/7 and have never had one be overweight.

Not all cats...

Ours don't self-regulate. (Well, two of the three probably would. The third? No.)

Anyway, it's important to do what works for the particular beastie, and not what you think should work, because that's what you did with the last one goshdarnit.

Which is why I said "most cats"...

I know, sorry, it's just sort of a berserk button for me. I'm sick of people acting like I'm starving them to death because I don't leave food out.

"Oh, your cat's only ten pounds? That's tiny!"

"No, she's healthy. You and your fucking furry hambeast are both double the weight you should be because you can't stop stuffing your faces."

"Oh, my cat's not fat, she's just very fluffy."

"She's 23 pounds! I can her her joints popping when she walks up the stairs! She's too fat to jump up on the kitchen counters!"

"She doesn't jump up on the counters because she's well behaved!"

"Cats don't work that way. If that cat isn't on the highest available surface when your back is turned, it's because she's physically incapable of getting there."

"She loves to climb!"

"She's lying on the floor. Wheezing."

etc.

this, cats in general are not like dogs who will gorge themselves

I think that with both, it all depends on how they were raised.

my parents dog is free-fed. they leave dry food out in a bowl all day and he eats when he wants to... he puts on a couple pounds every winter when walks become less frequent but otherwise manages his own weight fine.

My cat used to be fat, but fiancee started feeding her instead and measuring specific amounts, and going with wet food in the mix... now she is still heavy, but, she as lost a good 20% or so of her bodyweight... she is like 15 years old, and loves to jump up onto the back of the recliner ....

I say, feed the cats, but only a little bit

But by feeding them and keeping them alive, they will breed and make more cats that also need to be fed. And then they will make more cats and so on. Feed the couple cats out of kindness now and you may only be inadvertently spreading the suffering around. :colbert:

Indeed! Apparently, and against the best available advice, your parents continued to feed you, and just LOOK how that turned out! D:

😉

Seriously...what did some dumbasses do before the internet existed?

Does every problem with a VERY SIMPLE solution have to be put on the tubes for advice gathering from total strangers?

Feed the damn cats, ya slow-minded dick.

My cat climbs a huge ladder to get to an upper area of my apartment, but I've never seen him try to get on the kitchen counter. He's very thin. Definitely not over-weight. Probably closer to being under-weight.

That's because your counters are not the highest available space in your apartment. The loft he's climbing to is.

I'd be feeding the cats, and trying to get on their good side. Doesn't sound like the chick especially cares about them, and I might be able to score a couple free cats.
