...Even if it only hurts when I rotate it a certain way? Standing flat footed it feels absolutely fine. Still, I don't want to risk it and lengthen recovery.

If you're seeing a Dr. or physical therapist for the injury you really should run that by them.

Re-aggravating an injury sucks even worse than the initial injury, just more downtime in the long run.

How bad of an ankle injury? How healed is it? How is your mobility? Does it hurt to do air squats?

Nope, doesn't hurt. I think I'm going to start with some light weight squats and work my way up.

i had a sore wrist from dequervians tendinitis and my doctor said, "you can't make it any worse, have at it"

wrist is fine, although I have limited mobility

Nope, doesn't hurt. I think I'm going to start with some light weight squats and work my way up.

Warm up thoroughly and go for it. Do lots of light warm-up sets to make sure it feels ok and if you don't feel any pain, gradually bump the weight up to your work sets.

If it helps at all, I had a mild ankle sprain/twist/whatever a couple weeks back, and squats were actually one of the few leg exercises that didn't hurt. Definitely follow brikis's advice and warm-up thoroughly to test it out, though.
