Well here's the thing.

My brother has an XBOX and I'm not very fond of the controllers (I have small hands..almost too small for the controller). My roommate has a PS2. Basically I like 'mindless' games....stuff you do with your friends while you're chillin with a beer. Games like NCAA 2K3 and GTA. Is a Gamecube going to be a decent choice? Or should I just wait till the end of the semester and pick up a PS2...since it has GT3, GTA and NCAA 2K3....

.....decisions, decisions.....

I've never really been a fan of shooters on a console. But it's cheap.....

yes

edit: I've been trying to choose for the past few days. My roommate's brother might sell me his PS2, but he hasn't set a price. Or, I could take advantage of that MIR for the Gamecube. After playing Metroid at Circuit City, Gamecube seems to be a sure thing. However, I don't have a DVD player, and so the PS2 would be handy for that.

I'd neec to find about seven or eight games that I'm interested in that are available right now for what I'm interested it.

Possibly Mortal Kombat, NCAA 2K3...maybe metroid prime, I dunno, I'm not a fan of FPS games on consoles in general. How about racing?

The Xbox is now sold with a smaller controller.

I'd buy a Game cube though. :)

I was in the middle of eating when I replied, so I just typed yes. See edit above. :)

Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Party 4, and both Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 are exactly what you're looking for. Include friends and beer and you've got your whole Christmas break planned out.

metroid prime isn't like other FPS games on consoles because its not really an FPS... its more of a first-person-adventure (if any of you remember the old adventure game type)

Why wouldn't older people be able to have fun with a GameCube according to you?

It really depends on what games you want. GameCube has better 4-player games than ps2 imo and in that aspect it has an advantage in the party-games but as you said youself the ps2 has some great single and two-player games which won't come out on other consoles (GTA series for example).

i bought a gamecube because of the following reasons.

i dont need dvd... have a mintek.

the controllers are way better than the xbox.

the graphics are better than ps2

its $50 less.

metroid, fzero and zelda are in the pipeline.

no intention of ever playing games online on it, like xbox live, i have a comptuer for that.

all the 2k3 series games are on it just like the other systems, so sports games will still be there. it also have a much better warranty than the xbox and the easy to move handle on the back.

Other favorites amongst me and my homeez:

Sega Soccer Slam
Beach Spikers
Timesplitters 2 (but this is available on other platforms)
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee

They're marginal to okay single-player games (with the exception of Timesplitters 2, which is excellent), but the multiplayer is outstanding.

Spend $55 for a Mintek 1600 DVD player at Best Buy. It has worked fine for my second tv. It also has played VCDs and SVCDs even though it is not mentioned on the box.

To anyone who has Beach Spikers, is it comparable to Virtua Tennis or Mario Tennis? (Yes I know it's volleyball, but I see similarities in game play.)

LoL, look at all the people trying to pawn off unwanted GC's.

If you are old enough to sit around and booze, I'm not sure GC is for you. GC is into cutesy platformer-type games, where XBox seems into "adult" themed games that also include PC type games. Yes, its a bit of a generalization, but from the games recommended here, its right on target.

Mario Party 4 sucks. I sat around with my cousins over Thanksgiving playing this and I didn't want to play after about 20 minutes. I kept asking when I was going to get a gun rather than playing games that reminded me of "Field Day or Elementary Olympics". I'm not 12 anymore, the dialogue and themes in Nintendo platformers make me nauseous (See Zelda 64).

The only GC exclusive game that would make me consider buying GC is Metroid Prime. Other than that, most games will be multi-platform, with some XBox only titles that take advantage of XBox Live. Sega makes their entire sports line for all three systems, but Live lets you go online and stomp people :D

It's comparable in control style to Virtua Tennis for doubles play (two players versus computer or two players versus two players), but depending on the mode, your teammate may or may not be effective at passing or spiking the ball, which means you're somewhat less in control of the game. Overall, I'd say it's a little simpler in terms of options than Virtua Tennis, and the minigames included are so inconsequential that they might as well not be there.

It's a good party rental, but I think it's lacking in depth as a single-player game.

Actually chizow, I'm willing to bet that it's immature people who want these "mature" games. A mature person realizes that a fun game is a fun game even without copious amounts of violence.

I love seeing gibs fly as much as the next guy, but Super Mario Sunshine is still a fun game. But, if hating "kiddie" games lets you and your little boyfriends pretend you're adults, that's fine with me.
