Should I buy a 9800 Pro?

beat me to it 🙂 That's not a gaurantee though. Some software will report an R350 when an R360 is really present and vice-versa. The only true way to tell is to pull the HSF off the card and look at the silk-screening on the GPU itself

9800P appears to be faster than 5900XT in IL2, but I'd wait for a ~$200 AGP 6600GT if I were you, as it'll be faster and draw less power overall.

I have a 9800xt at home and a 6800 non ultra at work. In benchmarking i see the 6800 system running about 25 - 30 percent faster. Also the nv drivers seem more stable.

note the 9800 xt is on nf2 athlon 2500 and 6800 is on nf3 a64 3500

Indeed. Ati Tool reported my Sapphire Atlantis 9800 Pro with a r350 core, but when I switched to a better heatsink it said r360 on the core. Don't trust ANY program telling you what core you have, the ONLY way to be sure is to remove the hsf and check for yourself. Ati Tool and such programs read the core-information from the BIOS so the reported core depends on that.

By the way. Sapphire Atlantis 9800 Pro-cards NEVER have 128bit memory. Only 9800 Non-pros.

Was going to say, if you could manage to spend an extra $50, then the BFG 6800 vanilla OC could be had for $249 on outpost.com, here. Comes with the bonus of possibly softmodding to a lite version of a 6800GT.

You won't regret it. Mine came in a generic white box. It appeared to ber a manfacturer refurb, not a returned item. Make sure to test it quickly warranty = 2 weeks.

I just bought a ATI radeon 9800 pro from bestbuy for 180 without tax,

how can I tell if I have a 350 or 360 core? The heat sink is the shape of a parallelogram.

I'm hearing the only dependable way is to remove the heatsink and see what the core says. Voids your warranty though.

thanks, I ran the card on two systems. One was brand new (fresh windows install) the artifacts showed up on both identically.

With the refurb card I bought @ NewEgg....
I was using onboard GF-4 graphics....
I ran Driver Cleaner3, then installed card, reinstalled Nvidia chipset drivers and installed Catalyst Drivers.

No artifacts, nor problems at all.
I was running Catalyst 4.6, now on 4.9.

Being a glutton fro lost money, I bought the retail version...
