It is not a question of bitterness or jealousy. It is more a question of us encountering situations where college athletes received preferential treatment, particularly in the realm of academics.Wow, amazing how incredibly bitter and jealous everyone here is towards college athletes. None of you have any idea of the amount of time we have to put into our respective sports for training and competition.
A school recruiting a star athlete, who will go on to study basket weaving, so they can sell tickets to sporting events and get the alumni base all excited is somewhat counter intuitive to what an academic institution is supposed to represent.
Again, you make assumptions. I would imagine many on this forum were able to receive financial assistance on the merits of their academic performance. As far as I am concerned, a school should dish out more incentives to star students, and not star athletes.I am not saying whether or not we should get paid, but have a little respect for something you know nothing about. You sound like a bunch of brats whining about what you didn't get.
The price you have to pay for remaining at an instution that you would not have been accepted to otherwise. Of course, some athletes are also able to perform academically, but they tend to be the exception rather then the rule. While that is not even necessarily true, the student is able to focus entirely on his school work all day, while the athlete must begin his work after hours of practice late at night.
The situation at Duke is a prime example of why many do not have a positive attitude towards college athletes.

Yeah they should get paid. Most of them don't graduate anyways and are only there to make the Schools money!

I am about to graduate with a degree in Health Science from Boston University you jackass. I would have gotten in just fine without my sport.
Way to stereotype!!
No. I bet if you were to research it yourself you'd see where most Student Athletes, especially those who attend High Profile Schools playing High Profile Sports don't end up with a 4 year degree. I'm sure it's not as bad as the University of Cincinnati but I'm willing to bet it's over 50%.Originally posted by: BUrassler

Really, most don't graduate? Could you show me where you found those statistics?

Just because they don't graduate doesn't mean their idiots. Some aren't well educated despite endeing up at college and either leave school early to play pro or leave after their 4 years of eligibily are up.Originally posted by: BUrassler

I take offense to the implication that most college athletes are idiots. Is that not what was implied there?

Now I'm an idiot huh?Look Bitch, not all schools are BU. Do you actually believe that kids who skated through High School all their life and got a Scholarship just because they are good at Sports are going to take their education seriously. That's why it's a Big Deal when a School like yours wins something because their students have to do well in School to stay eligible, unfortunately that's not true for many others like Ohio State, USC and the like.Originally posted by: BUrassler

Oh, well if your sure.... and your willing to bet..... then it MUST BE TRUE!! Idiot.
This entire thread is based on stereotypes and assumtions.
You are the one doing the substituting not me. Just look at the big debacle that's going on at Ohio State and other Universities about some of their Basket Ball Players who are from the Balkans. Last time I looked they weren't Black or African American.Originally posted by: BUrassler
Substitute "college athlete" in this thread for "african american" and try to realize the amount of steroetypical and degrading comments that are being made.

Bitch, right.... the beauty of the internet, get away with saying anything and not get your ass beat for it.
How nice, I wasn't addressing your personal experiences. In my original post I said I am speaking about my school and experiences only. I did not group "all college athletes" together as everyone else did for that very point. Thats what I am saying to everyone trying to throw blanket statments out there about college athletes.

Don't take it so personal Bubba! I'll admit that I could be wrong but if I am I'm probably not that far off from being right. That's one of the dirty secrets about College Sports, many of those who get free rides because they are exceptional athletes do not end up graduating. Look at the University of Cinncinati's Basket Ball program for example!Originally posted by: BUrassler

Forget it, its like talking to a freaking wall here.
My experiences in this subject mean nothing, but your assumptions, which you are purely pulling out of your ass, is obviously how it is.
OK, you win.

The main argument for paying them is this:
These athletes play on a near professional level and generate enormous amounts of income for their schools. They are subject to national media scrutiny and they are not compensated any more than a student on an academic scholarship who can go about their life normally.
