I happen to see more Wal-Mart cashiers (well, I can think of two, at two different Wal-Marts) wearing wrist braces, yet still working the checking lanes every time I'm there. While two isn't a lot, that's infinitely more than I've seen at Target.

I also talked to one old lady (in her late 60s, if I had to guess her age) at Wal-Mart who I felt pretty sorry for at the time. She said the store was short-staffed, and she was on her 6th scheduled day in a row, and had 4 more go, and what made me feel sorry for her was that she said she was exhausted from working there so much. That store really should plan their scheduling better, and be more sensitive to their semi-retired part-timers, or they'll suddenly become short-timers (ie, they'll quit).

Based on those, and many other things I've made mental notes of, I think Target is better for the employees. Employee conditions, nicer stores and products, and hometown pride make me prefer Target.

I started referring to Target as "tar-jae" and thought I was being original. Since then I've run into a couple people who use the same pronunciation and were surprised to find another imitator. As far as I'm concerned, I'm the originator.

Sure Walmart offers low prices initially but once they've gotten into an area and ran everyone else out of business they jack up their prices and are no cheaper than anyone else.

Exactly. Walmart is the largest retailer so obviously bad things are going to happen more often and the media blows it all out of proportion. It's not rocket science figuring this stuff out.

Yes they also provide health insurance to all employees and pay more than the average wage for retail clerks.

Walmart also gives regular raises based on performance.

Pretty much all true. Raises are harder to get now with the new system they started using for pay increases. It's pretty much impossible to get a raise other than your yearly raise.

Allowing overtime is generally at the store manager's discretion, although some weeks they get orders from higher up not to allow overtime that week. Yes, you can work overtime at Wal-Mart, but usually only on weeks they expect huge sales.

Scheduling is up the the assistant manager for a particular shift. Usually you just have to point out the fact that you're scheduled for 10 consecutive days and they will work with you to split that up. Sometimes it's "worth" it to work 10 days in a row because then you can get 4 days off. 🙂

Wal-mart and Target used to be equa-distant from my parents house. 1 red light each way. One-way trip ~2mins. Target was a straight shot down the road, Wal-mart was off another road. For that reason we went to Target. Then Target moved closer but because of the location and road setup the following changed: 5 red lights each way. One-way trip 8 mins. :|

I shop at walmart because It is three blocks from the house and my wife works there so I get 10% off

Unless you started referring to it that way back in 1980, you're another imitator (That's about as early as I recall hearing it).

The reference, AFAIK, first came into use among young (female) shoppers, who could not afford to shop at the truly upscale stores for
the latest fashions (both of which had a french appeal to them, because france was a bit more popular back then).
Saying the name as if it were from a european outfitter, was an inside joke for people that still liked to buy nice things, but were
a bit more frugal in thier shopping habits.

There is no corporate policy against overtime, most of the time in fact it is encoraged. And as far as management getting written up for it :laugh:

Overtime is severely discouraged at walmart, the only time you can get overtime is if a DO gives specific permission to a serverely undermanned store. It is corporate policy.

If a walmart employee gets OT, the DO calls the store to find out why. Im not joking.
