Shooting at UC Berkeley--Haas School of Business

zinfamous

No Lifer
Just happened, but not much is known. My GF works in the building, and just called me about 5 minutes ago. She had exited the room ~ 1 minute before this gun shot went off.

Seems to be a single shot that went through a wall and into the media center room. Someone was carried out on a stretcher, but nothing else is really known.

Not much to report right now

there was a general strike today in protest of county police beating up on students last Thursday. No idea if this is somehow related (these are separate parts of campus)

Didn't they shut their reactor down in the 80s?

Post 9/11 i would guess. Michigan had a nuclear reactor also, they shut it down around 2004? I remember watching the refueling process - just some yellow tape, one cop and big stainless steel barrel with yellow radiation sign getting tossed onto a flatbed.

No it was way earlier. Rcpratt was pretty good on his guess

BERKELEY — University of California officials have decided to shut down a 20-year-old nuclear reactor on the Berkeley campus, saying the "political hassling" it sparked outweighed its usefulness.

I don't think so, I just found this article with a quick search:

In 1979 😉

Nuclear reactor at UC Berkeley called earthquake safe
April 09, 2004|Laura Perkins

Here is a look at the Bay Area's past. Items have been culled from The Chronicle's archives.

1979

April 10: Thomas H. Pigford, head of UC Berkeley's nuclear engineering department, says the facility is safe even though it is just 40 yards from the Hayward Fault. The $2 million facility is used to produce short-lived radioactive isotopes to be used in medical diagnosis, chemistry, mineral analysis, archaeological aging and hydrology.

I'm not sure that had anything to do with 9/11. There are still plenty of universities still operating research reactors.

She's ok I hope?

OK--so this guy (no ID yet--student, affiliate for UC Berkeley or not), waved a gun to a female staff member while in an elevator.

She runs out and gets the attention of nearby police--they are everywhere today b/c of protests. Meanwhile, the dude with the gun goes into a computer lab to try and blend in with students.

My GF is in the computer lab at this time, not knowing what's going on. She leaves, and there are police nearby trying to get an ID and planning to grab him. A moment or so later, one of the managers for the library (across the hall from the computer room), runs out and tells everyone to leave the building, this is not a drill.

The cops storm into the computer lab and fire six shots at the man who had the gun. He is alive. No idea if he ever fired the gun, but it sounds like he didn't. One of the shots penetrated the wall into an office for the director of the media center. He would likely have been shot if he was sitting at his desk.

That's the info that I have

😱😱

yeah, she had a meeting in the media center from 2-2:20, left, and the director guy comes running out to tell everyone to get out of the building at about 2:22 or so. She was walking around in that room while "gun guy" was in there.

I believe ~6 students remained in that room when the police arrived. It appears that he refused to raise his hands when requested, and drew his gun. So they blasted him.

The GF hosts her research studies in that room, but it is now a crime scene. Will have to find somewhere else, I guess.
