If it turns out to be a group of home-grown white guys who did the shooting...is it still terrorism?

Multiple people, clearly targeting a specific group of people. Yes, I don't think it matters much who the attacks are, they are terrorists.

except we don't know who did the Montreal thing yet.

It shouldnt matter. What matters is if it is terrorism or not. If we are going to go down this road, then a lot of the attacks Muslims commit against non-Muslims would be reclassified as not terrorism, because fear was not their specific purpose, only killing non-Muslims or placating some internal hatred that the attackers had.

Do you see the problem?

The Facebook page that one of the pictures comes from in the Reuters link has the name as Davis Aurini. Not David Aurine. I'll stay skeptical at this point.

To be honest, in any given terrorist attack, knowing the location and victims often gives you a pretty good idea of who the perpetrators possibly are.

This goes for Muslims as well as white supremacists, and any other ideology, faction, or group.

But we need to be careful about instantly blaming certain groups of people, and the de facto group that individuals will lay the blame on for any given terrorist attack usually has more to do with that individual themselves and what other sociological groups they have in their mind as "other", those that they tribalistically turn into enemies.

Agreed, let's wait it out until everything is known and verified. I doubt Adam Savage from Mythbusters would do such a thing

Yeah the guy named in that Reuters tweet was tweeting himself a few hours ago. Not buying it. The pic is valid for a similar name and its lifted from his Facebook. Given he tweeted just befor 8pm it Just doesn't feel right.

To me this is hate crime, not terrorism. Terrorism has a goal and it is not "Let's just waste these fuckers.". The terrorist acts are just means by which they hope to persuade the intended target to change their way of life. This sounds more like white supremacists not liking there are Muslims in Montreal. Doesn't matter to the dead of course, but it makes a difference on how to counter it.

Why isn't it both terrorism and a hate crime? It is meant to terrorize a certain religious population. It is both.

and it might well turn out that way. But there are still many unknowns.

It can be and probably is both. It wouldn't be terrorism if their goal wasn't to inflict terror on Muslims but rather just wanted to kill them because of a hatred for them, in which case it would be a hate crime but not terrorism. The motive is what decides it. I have no idea of the facts so I'll just say it's probably both.

Yup. My fault for not originally clicking further. Came up on the Twitter feed. Was already quoted so I edited my post to reflect that it's fake.

I didn't know Canada had any white supremacists.

Quite a few I am afraid.

And I have no idea why I am referring to Montreal when it happened in Quebec City...

La Presse reported the Police is treating it as terrorist attack and has activated terror response.

Would you label deliberate concentrated violent campaigns against black people by racist White Southerners in the 1960s as terrorism?

The direct goal of burning black churches is to inspire fear, which is exactly what terrorism is.
What about that black guy who burned down his own church?
