figures the liberal SnL would cop out of anything actually edge or provocative.
It's in our doctrine that making fun of the prophets is considered mocking the God himself. That's why you'd find it a bit touchy subject among Muslims, even it's been mentioned very clearly as a great sin in the Quran.
Perhaps it wasn't a good analogy, but it's appropriate for those who might think they have the ultimate freedom of speech to say whatever they'd like to without any consequences. Consider the army for another example, you let your free about your superiors or question their commands and you're in deep trouble.
Point is, we take religion issue much more seriously than you guys generally do, I just hope you take it into consideration.
By the way, neither total freedom of speech nor democracy is a deal breaker for most of the world. Beside that, do you guys really whish the rest of the world are as liberated and smart as you are? Would you guys allow it to exist? lets be real for a second 🙂.
As I stated earlier, I won't consider such cartoonist draws as anything but rubbish, free speech is another different subject.
Anyway thanks for the discussion. We may consider it as a two different views form a totally different perspectives, and I'm just telling the other side of the story.
This bit is confusing
Society in the US is and has always been very religious, it is one of the most religious countries in the world, especially when compared to the other western countries.
The founding fathers wanted to set up a government that was secular, not agnostic.
Based on the ideas of John Locke, an English philosopher
you should change is to was
It would not be possible to have gay rights/marriage today if the united states was the scary theocratic nation that certain groups and individuals like to promote as such.
In terms of demographics, India ranks as the country with the largest number of highly religious people in the world, with an estimated 960 million to 1 billion believers. China, although its number is less than a fifth of its total population (~18-19%), ranks second, with an estimated 240-260 million believers, followed by Indonesia (~235 million), the United States (~205 million), Pakistan (~175 million), Brazil (~168 million), Nigeria (~163 million) and Bangladesh (~161 million)
Of course a Muslim wouldn't consider it free speech. You don't know the meaning of the words.
We need a government sponsored Piss Muhammad, maybe then you'd get it.
Unless people like michal here took over, then you would have a theocracy or an Idiocracy
Right, Earl. I think 1prophet's point was that you often hear or see Christians online, and in real life, saying USA is a "Christian Nation", when they probably couldn't really tell you what a theocracy is.
Yea, unfortunately there's quite a few people who think like michael1980.
not much for a theocracy, and democrats are already working on the Idiocracy part, the more stupid people Dems can make, the more government dependents they have to vote for them.
I don't know, it looks like he is saying the US was religious when it is
Americans not knowing they live in a secular state and not an agnostic one was freaky enough
Who knows...
I dont think you understand the words being used.
There are very many religious that live here. But there are less now than there used to be.
Are you just guessing that, or is there some hard numbers?
I can see there is 75% calling themselves Christians compared to 80%, Muslims have doubled and nothing on the rest
I don't care who calls them self a Christian. Actions, not words, show the real deal.
THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS!
Some points. First, that they are the same was my point. Second, there is nothing on Earth that should be above taking a little ribbing without becoming homicidal. If your religion cannot, fix your religion, not the world. (Not yours personally - I'm speaking of those who turn to violence.) Third, the shooters weren't displaying "stupidity and arrogance", but homicidal rage. We're Americans, we celebrate stupidity and arrogance on reality television. It's homicidal rage that gets you DRT.
Glad to see you support hunting down and murdering people who offend Muslims. Or wait, do you only support threatening them with death to prevent insult to Islam?
We just had a lady hold a public event to do just what you sneer at others for doing. I must have missed your praise of them. As for me, my real name and city are listed in my profile. Which of us are hiding behind Internet anonymity again?

I do understand the words being used, the statement you just made is correct.
The way you describe it earlier was pretty iffy
The US is a secular state.
Correct?
It was supposed to be. What it has become is not. My claim was that the intention was to have a secular state. The US has changed from a nation of Christians to a Christian nation. In my opinion that is bad.
There are very many religious that live here. But there are less now than there used to be.
Assuming all American's know or don't know something based on a forum member on AT? Dunno, seems kinda silly.
I think that the difference between secular and agnostic is negligible in regards to the topic. Either way, our country was setup to keep religious influence out of government decisions. As we can see, that hasn't always been the case...but we still aren't anywhere close to Islamic nations in terms of how things work at a government level.
oh...I did not see that coming
I don't think you really have anything to worry about there, Christians are way too divided for anything to happen
edit- That's part of the reasoning behind the US being a secular state in the first place, the different Christian groups were fighting and discriminating against each other
But the us has become influenced by generally accepted Christian ideals. Gay marriage is an issue, because of Christians. People are not allowed to hold office if they are an atheist in some counties. Evolution is a huge one, and the only people who speak against it are religious people, and in the US, that 90+% Christian.
While Christians are divided, they are not that far apart on most things. The main point is that a secular society is best for everyone, not just the minority.
