Why does it matter if the poor live or die? The universe does not care what we do to them. The resources could better be used in advancing science than feeding poor people.

Amazing.

Its funny what happens if you replace the word poor in there with other words. Like blacks, jews, <insert ethnic/racial group here>

What I'd like to see here, is everybody who's posted or maybe in their avatar, Information about how they earn their income.
Then we can see where the opinions are coming from, on both sides of the fence.

It's the same old, same old, attack the vulnerable in society as a distraction from top end looting, they don't have the language skills to defend themselves and are constantly under the microscope. High time to focus solely on what caused the accident, then maybe wall street and the finance industry can be seriously harnessed to the betterment of the nation. A total inversion of whats been happening for the last 20years odd.
So who wants to go live on welfare? if its so attractive.....go try it out!
Shame, Shame, Shame.

Ted Kennedy years ago proposed eliminating welfare in exchange for a guaranteed right to work for all Americans. Of course righties opposed his plan and it went nowhere.

Your laughable. You don't think the companies that will pay someone to figure out how to do that won't turn around and start doing the same thing with their $0.15/hour labor?

Some of these free market dogmatists also maintain this rather racist belief that only Americans or Westerners can use technology and innovate.

Many are not interested in a productive job. They have made the choice to not be qualified for the higher paying jobs.

They have determined that it is easier to suck off the government tit than work their asses off unlike previous generations. And they then perpetuate that cycle to their children.

There are jobs available to people with a HS education - they may not be glamorous but they are there. there are even jobs for those without a HS education. Even less glamorous; trash pickup, toilet cleaners, etc.

Some will actually pay decently if they get their foot in the door.
But that requires having the determination to cleanup and sell yourself

That may be true for the urban poor to some extent. However, you've ignored the issue of whether or not our economy has enough jobs for everyone who wants to work and enough jobs that allow people to maximize the use of their skills and abilities.

We first need to fix our economy before we start work on rehabilitating the underclass.

Imagine what would happen if the poor adopted that attitude themselves but in reverse--that the upper classes don't matter and then proceeded to revolt and slaughter the upper classes.

Theres a reason why the jobs are moving. Its because of unions, minimum wage, farm subsidies, taxes, regulations, and restrictive energy policies. All these policies add on to the cost of doing buisiness here. If we can chop off costs, we can keep the jobs.

Don't forget so-called "child labor" laws. Think of all the steel and textile mill jobs we could get back if we let eight year olds work again. At least the bigger, healthier ones.

Your heroes, the financial elite, have been saying the same thing about the uppity middle class for the last 30 years or more, and they've largely been having their way in the matter, too...

Think of it as thinning the herd. I have no real answer to this other then work programs. You want free shit. Work for it.
Could have thinned the herd if pseudo Patriots like Limbaugh and Cheney had been drafted and put on the front lines in Nam.

Thats where machines come in. You pay someone 8-10 dollars an hour to watch and fix a machine that does the work of 100 people.

Yes, but if you can do that, why not just put the machine in india, and pay someone $0.15 per hour to watch and fix the machine?

Do you get it now? There's no end to it.

What many of these folks don't realize is that India and China can graduate engineers, too. Here are some stats for the number of engineers graduated in 2004:

USA: 222,335
India: 215,000
China: 644,106

Not only will the Indians and Chinese be able to watch the machines, they'll also be able to design and engineer the machines!

Th Greenville (SC) News noted today that Mr. Bauer's remarks came a week before he is scheduled to appear at a fundraiser for rescued dogs and cats. Apparently he does have some compassion for animals...

And if we can get rid of those pesky child-labor laws, we're really in business.

well the first thing to change is the idea that Clinton that brought us, that everyone can and should own their own home.

They shouldn't. They can't(obviously).

Obviously people need to start building smaller homes that are affordable to the lower end of the income spectrum.

Thats a whole other issue of course.

It wasn't Clinton who brought that idea.

Maybe because the logistics of implementing and enforcing a "right to work" would be a nightmare?
