From what I understand the retail version is not as restrictive as the OEM versions. Also addtional licences are not as expensive as buying another disc. Some one else can clairify this better. I do know that you can upgrade the guts like a motherboard, cpu, ram, nic and video with the same XP licence, although I have not tried that yet.

my college tuition was 34k a year

XP cost 150-200$ in the bookstore

I called and talked to the Anti-Piracy guy at MS and he told me "every thing is legit". If he had said no then I would not have gone though with the deal.

the company i use to work for supplies resellers with hardware and software. They buy copies of Windows XP Pro OEM for $17 a copy when puchased in bulk. I believe purchasing the seperate licenses costs even less than that.

My main point is never pay retail for anything.

I think of retail pricing as the cost of instant gratification. If I want/need something right now, retail is the fastest,. easiest way to go about getting it. If I can wait a bit or do some homework, I never pay full retail for anything.

Sorry but XP Home is nothing more than the software equivalent of the 486SX chip. It is the exact same OS dumbed down. I'll pay the other 1/3 and get the whole OS. I do think that MS is short sighted in not being willing to price some deals for the home/enthusiast market, something along the lines of a 4 machine pool license. In the end though it is their product and they can decide how to sell it and what to charge.

At mine office was $100 IIRC, and I just ordered Adobe CS2 Premium for $200 ($1200 retail), so that is at least a good deal.
