Ever think that with Vista around the corner, MS is selling the discs at a discount to eliminate inventory?

No...

If that were true then Why are 10-11 year old copies of Windows NT still selling for $300+?

Correct.

You got screwed.

I sure did! But the cost of your Tuition was 10K, so maybe I got the better deal?

Education is cheap and ignorance is expensive.

It was under $5000 a year, but thanks for playing.

The only thing I think is a rip off is that you can't install it more than once in the same household. I feel sorry if you have more than one jobless teenager living under your roof.

From what I understand the retail version is not as restrictive as the OEM versions. Also addtional licences are not as expensive as buying another disc. Some one else can clairify this better. I do know that you can upgrade the guts like a motherboard, cpu, ram, nic and video with the same XP licence, although I have not tried that yet.

If you're pissed about that... wait until you find out the price for Microsoft Office 2003 Professional.

you paid too much my friend!
the company i use to work for supplies resellers with hardware and software. They buy copies of Windows XP Pro OEM for $17 a copy when puchased in bulk. I believe purchasing the seperate licenses costs even less than that.

Wanna sell me a couple at his price then? You'll be making a 100% profit!

I think of retail pricing as the cost of instant gratification. If I want/need something right now, retail is the fastest,. easiest way to go about getting it. If I can wait a bit or do some homework, I never pay full retail for anything.

1. $35 for an employee discount price is not unreasonable.
2. Who said Microsoft was not making enough money?
3. Most users do just fine with XP Home, which is 2/3 the cost of XP Professional.

Sorry but XP Home is nothing more than the software equivalent of the 486SX chip. It is the exact same OS dumbed down. I'll pay the other 1/3 and get the whole OS. I do think that MS is short sighted in not being willing to price some deals for the home/enthusiast market, something along the lines of a 4 machine pool license. In the end though it is their product and they can decide how to sell it and what to charge.

You're kidding, right?

The only thing you could possibly complain about is remote desktop.

I'm upset that my school doesn't give discounts on MS stuff anymore.

I know that all the OS's used to be $25 and office used to be $35.

At mine office was $100 IIRC, and I just ordered Adobe CS2 Premium for $200 ($1200 retail), so that is at least a good deal.

their employee discount can be used for personal use and limited gift giving also. the employee is not making a profit off them, so there is nothing wrong with it. i too benefitted from the employee discount without being a M$ employee.
