Aha! A glimmer of hope!

What's causing the slowness IE8 - the huge hosts file that S&D creates?!?!?

I've always wondered about that!

Hrm...

Dude, you're such a tease!

Maybe it is S&D Immunize... makes sense, now that I think about it.

I guess there's one way to find out. LoL! :D

EDIT I just did some quick reading, and you are indeed right.

Confirmation: http://www.calendarofupdates.c...ex.php?showtopic=17654 (Calendar of Updates Forums - Update Talk )

For now users depending on IE-SPYAD and immunization by Spybot S&D (and others)... should continue to use IE7. If you want IE8, you need to disable IE-SPYAD or Spybot S&D immunization (and others) to avoid the freezes, high CPU usage.

And, here's another distinct possibility... not to mention all the incompatible software that's listed:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/dd441788.aspx (Release Notes for Internet Explorer 8)

Turn off Data Execution Prevention group policy

The Group Policy setting, Turn off Data Execution Prevention (Windows Components | Internet Explorer | Security Features), does not currently function as expected. While the Internet Control Panel option will appear to be disabled, Data Execution Prevention is still turned on. This is a known problem and will be corrected it in a future update.

Is MS saying to turn off DEP??? I thought it was turned on by default in IE8. Or, are they saying DEP cannot be turned off?

Regardless, is running IE8 really worth the risk???

I consider DEP, and S&D Immunize, to be crucial to the well-being of my lappy!

I'm back to thinking I won't install IE8 anytime soon... if I have to disable my entire defense system(s)...

If you re-read it in context, what they're telling you is that Group Policy contains a switch that's supposed to control whether the IE-specific DEP is on or off, but that switch currently isn't effective on IE8. If you had DEP issues, you'd have crashes with Data Execution Prevention error messages and log entries, not just slowness, so I don't think there's any reason you should disable DEP.

DEP is a valuable proactive mitigation, especially in combination with ASLR. Spybot S&D's immunization is a reactive, hit-or-miss measure, always a step behind. After sending my system to hell and back unscathed in the course of my malware-hunting ventures :camera: without Spybot's assistance, I see no reason that Spybot's immunization should be "crucial" to the security of your lappie, especially not on Vista with UAC enabled. If you want to boost its security, review my security guide and I bet you'll find one or two new tweaks to add to your strategy, such as SEHOP.

Besides, IE8 has its own "immunization" built in anyway, in the form of SmartScreen (reportedly quite good).

Here?s how the study ranks the browsers:

-Microsoft Internet Explorer v8 (RC1) achieved 69% block rate
-Mozilla Firefox v3.07 achieved just over 30% block rate
-Apple Safari v3 achieved 24% block rate
-Google Chrome 1.0.154 achieved 16% block rate
-Opera 9.64 achieved 5% block rate
-Microsoft Internet Explorer v7 achieved 4% block rate

For a "poor" browser, it's not bad ;)

I'm in a whimsical mood today - maybe I'll give it another shot.

Actually, I'm kinda mad at my lappy...

I'm multi-booting it, and I wiped 7b off the Travelstar last week, to make room for FreeBSD 7.2 - only to find out (this morning) that BSD doesn't recognize the SATA II controller in my lappy - at least, the AMD64 version doesn't...

Sooo, if I can inflict some pain on my Toshy, by installing IE8, it'll make me *feel* better.

You can't let these devices get the best of you, you know?!?!? :D

Bad dog! Bad! Bad! Bad!!!

WoW! They fixed it!!!

I just bought some bum a can o' soup... :D

First of all, I uninstalled S&D.

Then, I booted into Linux Mint and removed 9000+ lines from my Windows HOSTS file.

After that, I booted into Vista, turned off my AV software, restored the hidden IE8 update in WU, and installed it.

Damn it, mechBgon... IE8 is working great!

After I made sure everything was working correctly, I went to my production web site...

http://www.lenon.com/ (Lenon.com)

...and watched the YouTube Alizée Youpidoo video in HD. Looked better than Firefox! :|

Sooo, I suppose this is the spot where I eat crow, and thank you for NOT resorting to personal attacks - except for the 'MS hater' comment. Thanks! :)

Hrm...

Well, isn't this interesting?!?!?

I think I'll go reinstall S&D now, and see what happens...
