Shaking at 60-65 mph

I recently put my studded winter tires on new rims, had them put on my vehicle. Noticed that some of the lugs nuts were cracked but the rims felt tight.
When I drive at 63 mph the steering wheel shakes, do I assume that the wheels are out of balance?

Could be. It's either that or one of your tires is beginning to separate from the inside. Have them balanced, and if it doesn't go away then it's a tire falling apart.

The tires have less than 500 miles on them. How do I check for a tire falling apart?

Sometimes a new one is bad. Doesn't happen often, but it happens. Have them balanced first, get new lugs and go from there.

Pro Tip: If you recently drove through snow check to see if it got packed into the rim.

lt doesn’t seem to wobble on the hub.
I keep it in a heated garage, try to avoid snow piles or drifts, and slush.

Did you use a torque wrench when installing? +1 on balance an checking for a snow or ice build up. The latter will really cause a shake etc

Is it a crack in the nut, or just a crack in the chrome finish on the surface of the nut?

If it's the former, yeah, what @JCH13 said. If it's just the finish, no biggie.

please tell me you replaced those lugnuts. cracked lugnuts means things are *way* out of balance, and if you continue to drive on them, they will fail potentially catastrophically.

Yeah, get those replaced ASAP or a shudder at 63mph will be the least of your worries!

Just my 2 cents:

My 650i had the same symptoms: a noticeable shake between 60-65. It would go away at higher speeds.

Front right tire was getting ready to unravel.

I know nothing of cars. But I had a similar thing happen in a Honda Civic. It would shake but only at 50 mph to 55 mph. No shake above or below those speeds. The dealer claimed it was a broken engine mount bracket. Replaced it and the shaking went away. Going ~50 mph must have given my car a harmonic frequency that got amplified but the frequencies were too slow or too fast at other speeds.

That seems to happen a lot. Had a car with a loose exhaust shield that only rattled while accelerating between 50 and 55 and ~2500 rpm. Any other combination of speeds / engine rpm and it didn't do it.
