Shake Shack Hype

So I went to shake shack last night, not bad. I had a "Shack Stack" which is a burger topped with a fried patty of mushrooms and cheese, and bacon. It was pretty good, if unremarkable. I also had a "Concrete" which is basically a high end Dairy Queen Blizzard. I got a "Shack Attack" which is basically chocolate ice cream, with more chocolate, some more chocolate, and then a bit more chocolate. The Concrete was also not bad.

Now, I don't think I'd ever head out of my way for this place, but its certainly edible.

My new burger ranking is probably:
  1. Umami Burger
  2. Five Guys
  3. BurgerFi
  4. In-N-Out
  5. Shake Shack

For burgers in that tier of semi-fast food, I'd have to go like this:

1) Shake Shack
2) Five Guys
3) In-N-Out
4) Smashburger

Now, I will say I've had each of these multiple times except In-N-Out, and the one I ate at was in Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. It was quite sloppily prepared and sorta-kinda warm. Perhaps it would be better at a different, less-touristy location. Even still, it was better than any of the various burgers I've had from Smashburger.

Five Guys is kind of crappy. Lean beef and fake cheese. Shake Shack is ok. I really avoid any burger chains if possible.

It seems like every time I walk by Madison Square Park, the place has a line wrapped around the block. Why? Valid question. I had it once and that was enough. Being in NYC, you literally have hundreds if not thousands of better options for a burger than this place. I don't understand the hype and suppose I never will.

My top picks (including Fast Food). Unfortunately for many of you, these are local to Texas.

1) Hop-Doddy's (local to Austin/Dallas)
2) Liberty Burger (local to Dallas)
3) Smashburger
4) Twisted Root Burger Co. (only seen them in Dallas so far)
5) Whataburger (local to TX-OK-LA region)
6) In n Out
7) Wheelhouse Burger (this is a local Houston dive, only open for lunch, only takes cash)

Dairy Queen gets an honorable mention for me here. I just can't ever seem to find one, and when I do, it's usually in the ghetto or looks run down. But from what I remember, I used to like them.

While you were out wasting time and money I was at home frying up a whole slew of Freedom Patties with a frosty Freedom brew in my left hand.

I also had some home cut crinkle Freedom fries with just the right amount of Freedom seasoning, and a few heaping spoonfulls of Freedom shrimp pasta salad. I estimate my cost was 4.50$ per plate.

Then I Freedomized my wife for a few hours and got a delightful nights sleep. This probably all occured within the same time frame it took you to think of where to go, waste your money on crappy slop, ingest that sludge into your gullet, and then drive your happy ass home.

I hope it was worth it ya freaking commie.

I have to agree. It was unremarkable although I would certainly select it over the competing 5 guys across the street. The hamburgers are not a great size- 1 too small and 2 too much. Everything is way overpriced.

Don't agree about Umami burger though....bleeccccch!

I had a Whataburger once, and I remember falling in love.

Nothing has topped Five Guys though, IMHO. I've always had a terrific burger from them. Fries are outstanding.

Recently tried Smashburger - it wasn't bad but didn't seem to live up to the hype.
Neither did In n Out. Better than fast food, but I suspect I like Whataburger more, even with years in-between tasting.

It's pretty decent. I'd definitely rate it as one of the better burger chains…preferable to Five Guys. Better than In-n-Out ehh I think I prefer to consider it as different than In-n-Out based on price point and burger makeup not necessarily better or worse.

However if you do find yourself in NYC definately skip it and go to Burger Joint (inside the Le Parker Meridien), Peter Luger's, or Minetta Tavern. There are probably another dozen worthy local places to go as well but time and my waistline rarely consent to the indulgence.

Before Shit Shack became a franchise/chain they were awesome. Now, they are just overpriced hipster douches. The meat is very subpar. Sigh, I remember sending my subordinates out to madison square park to wait on line for hours to get my burger.

That sounds pretty hard to get wrong. Unless the cheese isn't Swiss...

OK, that's not so great. Plus the meat looks underdone. D:

you have to get a double shackburger to experience what a Shake Shack burger is. I tried their recent Roadside Shack Burger and it was still very good but not great like a double shackburger is always. And you have to get a double. The single is not enough meat to bun/condiments ratio.

Have tried Five Guys, In n Out, Smashburger, Whattaburger - Smashburger is just plain crap. Used to think In n Out was the best but the meat blend that the Shack uses is just utterly superior. Five Guys and In n Out are good but not great anymore, after the Shack attacked. Whattaburger I remember it being good but I was drunk and it was only once so can't judge.

I've only been to the Shake Shacks in NY and NJ. Maybe they haven't been able to maintain quality at each - I go to the Battery Park location the most and it's consistently good though.

Been to Smashburger at two locations and In n Out in Vegas, San Diego and LA multiple times at each.

Only tried Shake Shack in Vegas.. was not impressed. Custard was horribly bland too. As for ranking the local fast food burgers I've had..

1. Super Duper Burger
2. In-N-Out
3. Habit
4. BurgerFi (though they only have one location around here)
5. Gott's
6. Five Guys

I don't consider Umami fast food since you have to order sitting down and $11 for a regular burger is too much. They do have good fried pickles though..

obligatory InO vs Shake Shack comment

The cost
Shake Shack: Double Shack Burger was $7.99, fries $2.95 and vanilla shake $5.25 for a total of $17.50.

In-N-Out Burger: Double-Double was $3.35, fries $1.60 and vanilla shake $2.10 for a total of $7.62.

Note: One Double Shack Burger costs more than an entire meal at In-N-Out Burger.

Shake Shack is amazing at Citi Field because they have raw jalapeno's. Without them, its still really good but not 5 hour line good.

Putting Five Guys on any list like this is kind of embarrassing though, they'd be just above Wendys on the total fast food scale for me.l

There's not a meal on the planet I would stand in line 5 hours for. Not even if it was all you can eat, 100% free. Fuck that.
