Shake Shack is amazing at Citi Field because they have raw jalapeno's. Without them, its still really good but not 5 hour line good.

Putting Five Guys on any list like this is kind of embarrassing though, they'd be just above Wendys on the total fast food scale for me.l

Interesting.

I have no idea how people reach this opinion, but alas, an opinion is an opinion. They can be wrong, but everyone is entitled to be wrong. ():)

I haven't had any fast food or fast casual burger compare IMHO. Culver's and Steak n Shake have pretty good burgers when looking for something cheaper and faster, but if I want a treat but don't want to go to a local burger joint (I don't know of any in my neck of the woods that aren't bars and sit-down restaurants) to get something even better, then I settle on Five Guys. It's more rare because I would like cheaper, but to me it's worth the treat.

I need to have Whataburger again, I remember being impressed when I tried it in Texas. Next time I visit my sis I am making a point to try it again. I suspect it'll be equivalent to Culver's and Steak n Shake to my tastebuds.

Smash Burger was pretty good, tried it with some of their flair but that wasn't what I'd consider a better burger. I need to try it without their sauce to get an opinion for the burger itself, and I suspect it'll be that much better without the sauce. The Smash Fries were great.

It seems like every time I walk by Madison Square Park, the place has a line wrapped around the block. Why? Valid question. I had it once and that was enough. Being in NYC, you literally have hundreds if not thousands of better options for a burger than this place. I don't understand the hype and suppose I never will.
I work right across the street, so I experience this pretty much every day... I can confirm that 95% of the line is tourists who saw SS mentioned in a guidebook or just want to check out the original.

if I head over there at like 11:30-45, there's no line and I can grab a decent burger for lunch; it's a good happy-medium between price point and quality. I could get a better burger at a different place but pay more, or walk over to McDonalds and get a shitty burger for $1.

once noon hits, though, the line grows to ridiculous levels... there's no way I'd wait in that 12:30 pm line just for one of their burgers.

(can't comment on their shakes since I'm lactose intolerant and have never ordered one)

My new burger ranking is probably:
  1. Umami Burger
  2. Five Guys
  3. BurgerFi
  4. In-N-Out
  5. Shake Shack

Wow really? I like Burgerfi so much better than Five Guys. Maybe all of the Five Guys joints in CT are just crummy...hmm.

Oh my lord, I can't imagine that. I would be in Eataly every single day. Are you in the Flat Iron?

I've never been to most of the places on the lists above (most not in my area) but the mostly high ranking of Five Guys really makes me wonder. When Five Guys first came in the area they were OK, but mostly for gluttons that favor vast quantity over any concept of quality. Now they are purely glutton fare-they have cut out almost all the flavor and a good deal of the quantity as well. Definitely an over-expanded franchise chain.

If you are going to spend the upscale burger places these places charge, hunt out your local diners and local ethnic small restaurants. You'll almost certainly have a far better meal for the same bucks.

*(yet another ATOT burger thread)

This, but every damn time I feel genetically pre-destined to respond no matter what? This is the Internet, my opinion (usually wrong) MUST be heard and sometimes felt! :D

I need to try Shake Shake burger. There is a location in town but I don't want to drive 30 minutes just to eat a burger.

For those saying Five Guys is bad, I'm curious how you top your burgers. I always get the cheeseburger topped all the way with jalapeños added. I haven't had a bad burger yet although some locations are definitely better than others. Luckily the one closest to my house is great.

Personally I always like American cheese on it. I prefer a martins potato roll or something similar. When I make them myself all I add are raw onions and then a mix of ketchup/mayo. Lettuce is ok too. I don't put tomato on it but I am fine with tomato when I eat at the Shack or In n Out.

My three favorite burger joints all do a take on the 1000 island/ketchup-mayo mix - Shake Shack, In n Out and this place called Left Bank burgers in Jersey City where I live. Left Bank uses a buttery toasted brioche bun that also works amazing and they just top it with a slice of raw onion and their Left Bank Sauce. Absolutely delicious. Anybody who is a burger fanatic that lives in the NY Metro Area I'd suggest a trip to Left Bank burgers for a whirl.

Steak and Shake has always been too greasy for me, and every location I've been in always seems dirty with flies buzzing around. Total detractor for me. But you did remind me of Culver's, I'd add that on my list in terms of a delicious fast food burger. Also, they use krinkle cut fries. I love me some krinkle cut fries and frozen custard.

Def try Whatabuger again when you're back in TX. Try it with grilled onions and grilled jalapenos. Don't forget to get some spicy ketchup for your fries! :p

I had a burger for lunch. Well, a couple burger patties, heirloom tomatoes, butter lettuce and pickles but no bun. Gotta watch my diet. :[

Depends on where your at maybe I suppose.

I do not even go to Steak and Shake very often, but the one nearest me is pretty much spotless and go more for the chili there myself.

Still like their burgers and shakes also, but it's a rare thing.

Dunedin Brewery makes a good Pub Burger if I go out to watch a band here in Tampa Bay, there are a lot of good on standard spots.

And Wendy's, I know it's not trendy, and haven't even been there in awhile.

I still prefer doing things at home I guess.

That sounds pretty hard to get wrong. Unless the cheese isn't Swiss...

OK, that's not so great. Plus the meat looks underdone. D:

How are you supposed to eat that? Unhinge your jaw?

I ranked the Burger Chains according to how often I eat them (which obviously has to do with taste and tolerance). I go to In-N-Out at least once a month, sometimes twice. I eat at Five Guys maybe once a year... don't get me wrong, it's a good tasting burger, but greasy as fvck. I'd like to eat something and not get sick afterwards, thankyouverymuch. I've only eaten a WhataBurger burger maybe once. To me, they're a step above a McDonald's burger, which isn't saying much.

Ah so. The Freddy's I've been to is definitely greasier than 5G, but YMMV.

Most of the better burger places are overpriced. To be frank, nothing tops a BK whopper. And it is the lowest cost.

Want a good burger? Make 1/3 pound patties out of ground chuck. Mix salt and pepper into the grind and hand mix. Then make patties. Then lightly salt them and pan fry them or use a griddle on the grill. Top with cheese and serve on toasted kaiser of your preference. The patties should be flat before grilling. Maybe a 5" diameter. They will be lesser diameter and thicker once grilled.

Better yet, grind the chuck on your own and add in some bacon.

My top picks (including Fast Food). Unfortunately for many of you, these are local to Texas.

1) Hop-Doddy's (local to Austin/Dallas)
2) Liberty Burger (local to Dallas)
3) Smashburger
4) Twisted Root Burger Co. (only seen them in Dallas so far)
5) Whataburger (local to TX-OK-LA region)[b/]
6) In n Out
7) Wheelhouse Burger (this is a local Houston dive, only open for lunch, only takes cash)

Dairy Queen gets an honorable mention for me here. I just can't ever seem to find one, and when I do, it's usually in the ghetto or looks run down. But from what I remember, I used to like them.

Whataburger is in Birmingham Alabama and Jackson Mississippi too. Could be other places, but those two for sure. We have people that drive 3+ hours to go to Whataburger. The one in Jackson was horrible, but I was told the ones out west were waaaayyy better.

Whoa, had no idea Whataburger had made it out that far. They are actually HQ'd out of Corpus Christi, TX.
And to the one guy that equated Whataburger "slightly above" McD.
