ATOT News Staff reporting live on the scene. Preliminary reports are sketchy. Automated equipment reports say 3.7 magnitude 2 miles from Berkeley.

Switched on mobile scanning equipment. Now tracking mobile news crews, fire and ambulance and CB radio channels.

Hear news first on ATOT.

I was in the east bay during the quake of October 17, 1989 which measured 7.1 magnitude.

I had amateur radio equipment in my mobile and news crews were very active on my scanners with the Cypress Freeway Collapse and other happenings in the bay area. CB radio operators sprang to life because this was the day they were waiting for. They shouted "emergency traffic only" and tried to co-ordinate something. I drove around the bay area surveying the damage.

Regarding today's quake at 7:12 PM, scanner traffic for news crews has no mention of the quake, CB traffic is neglible. I personally think it's over and it's no big deal. That's just the opinion of this ATOT Reporter.

Well, you can say it's no big deal but my empty box of Totally Mad with the big picture of Alfred E. Newman fell off the top shelf of my bookcase. That bookcase is bolted to the wall (hey, I know I'm in earthquake country).

I live (and lived) about 5 miles from the Cypress Structure and went down there and had a look shortly after the '89 quake. I still have a pile of bricks in my yard that came down from a collapsed chimney.

News crews are silent on this topic, CB traffic doesn't discuss it, and the radio station that encouaged people to call in has changed topic.

Your personal experience may vary.

I usually never feel them. This was probably the first one I felt since 1989.

We were having dinner in Pleasanton, and felt a little bump, but not much more than like a truck going over a curb outside your house..."thumpity-thump"...done.

Nah...TGI Fridays. (wife's choice) Wow, their menu has gone down hill (lost several of what we thought were their better choices) ...Not sure it'd be worth making the drive just to eat there. Not bad since we were already there, but not as good as they used to be...

See, there's the perception because you see the number and the perception because you feel the quake. A 3.7 quake when you are close to the epicenter is much more shocking than an 8.1 when you are on the other side of the world. And the thing is, the second you feel a quake hit you have to ask yourself that question: Is THIS the BIG ONE?

Even the biggest earthquakes of all (the ones that turn everything upside down and inside out) generally start small and build up over the course of a few seconds. The big shaking may not start for 10-20 seconds after it starts. DiG! In countries with a history of large earthquakes, the locals are in the habit of running outdoors in an effort to avoid their dwellings falling down on top of them. Of course, that strategy only works if you can get outside in the clear before it starts shaking violently. You might have 10-15 seconds, maybe 20 if you are lucky. If you can't get to a safer area that quickly, you have to get under a table, under a support structure or something similar or just hold onto your butt and pray.

Felt a quick jolt like someone hit frame of the house with a big log, then over in like a second. But that is 2x around 3.5s this week.

Lets hope the pressure is released or whatever is going on down there lately.

This is the second time this week, both in Berkeley.
And both times I felt nothing (live 40 miles to the south)

My house is just a few blocks from these last couple quakes. They both delivered a good jolt, but nothing sustained. My wife (non-CA native) was spooked.

This one is being listed as a 3.7 as well: usgs

I only hope that this is releasing energy and calming the fault down, not an indication of bigger ones about to happen soon.

Hey, honestly it was a guess. Looks like I should work in geology. :)

Wow, not bad.

I predict a new gambling trend. Guess the epicenter, and guess the magnitude. Bonuses awarded for correctly guessing the magnitude of the first and second aftershocks.

Indeed. Though it's a shame the two of you weren't together at the time.
