When my wife and I lost our weight it wasn't some crazy diet fad it was simple arithmetic. As long as we burned more than we ate we lost weight. It continues to boggle my mind how hard people make this process out to be...

I think counting calories is a more effective way, because at least in my experience, you're less likely to get bored/tired of your crazy new diet fad. Diets tend to be restrictive on what you can eat, and let me tell you... that gets old/boring fast. I can go out and eat a burger and fries, which would be a huge no-no on some diets, but I have to realize that if I'm eating 1200 calories for lunch, then my dinner ought to be smaller. Of course, how much depends on your variables (size, weight, etc.).

I use a free calorie counter app on my phone. Input my weight, height, goal, and how much I want to lose a week and it gave me a very easy calorie goal every day. It's been two month and I've lost 9lbs. I'll still cheat almost every weekend but I'm good during the week. I made sure it was something simple and set my goal for one pound a week and it's been pretty easy.

Thats how we feel too. We made a lifestyle choice - not a temporary fix that wouldn't work in the long run. This way we can eat whatever we want in moderation. We also average them over the week. If we go to a brunch buffet with friends we will still eat quite a bit but the day before and the rest of that day will be much lighter.
