There are background checks for anyone purchasing firearm from a licenced dealer. Even then unless a doctor treating someone with mental issues reports it, there will be nothing to prevent the person from passing a federal background check.
There will be for a felony conviction in the past for a dealer I imagine.
I'm not even sure about disclosure on a mental health type, they basically have a bit of restrictions on disclosure in the past like a lawyer has. I know it has supposedly been altered over time, but not sure it happens often.
Is still a bit of one of those gray areas it seems to me.
I've known several LEO's in the past that are perfectly fine with open carry actually, it makes it pretty obvious who is packing to begin with. Normally, they are not the people that are going to do some hair brained kill spree, but even then they would have eyes on them.
