I heard it was a patriot who wanted to kill liberals.

They had it coming. Or mexican terrorism on the rise, depending on how indigenous the rapist/patriot looks.

Not great surprise the unerrringly dishonest feel compelled to concoct what I'm hoping or not given the facts of the matter make them look so bad.

Did I misinterpret something?

I'll be honest a lot of the times I feel as if you aren't responding to people who respond to you. You just sort of run through some sort of narrative in your heard and leave a lot of people scratching their heads. I'm just asking for clarity. I think we all understand that you operate on a higher level than most of us given your background and education, and our relatively low education level. But would you mind at least helping us a little bit?

It's a play on how much the right bases their opinion of people on how not-white they are, ie "illegals" code for indigenous looking mexicans who get the Sheriff Joe treatment. Ergo if he appears white-hispanic enough (a la Zimmerman), the narrative becomes a hero of some sort, but sucks for him if born (or I guessed dressed) looking wrong.

The way that people accept how that system works, and in fact might defend it rather vigorously, is a reflection of our society.

Wtf. Rick Scott is out right now saying g he's talked to Trump and Pence several times but never called the President for resource help.

Yeah I just saw that. Right after saying about 5 times that he called Trump and Pence to keep them informed, he then says something about "not wanting to politicize this". Ehh???

How would this shooting have had the opportunity for you to play on any of that? People calling it terrorism vs "troubled youth" or something along those lines?

Isn't this a bad example because it's so clearly not a defensive gun use or anything remotely resembling something that could be heroic (a la Zimmerman, as you put it)?

If it's a bad fit, couldn't you have picked a different schtick this thread?

Most all american politics comes down to the same thing, this forum basically rehashes the one formula repeated with little care for what's actually going on. Consider that it's pretty obvious Obama is barely white enough to be acceptable, so he will never get a pass at any hint of uppityness, whereas that lot will cheerleader the most vulgar possible white guy as pres. Bring that mindset into any matter, like this one, and the way right wing news reacts to these tragedies or otherwise is entirely predictable. Just look at the aftermath of the Orlando shooting, with Trump ceasing the moment to propel his anti-brown narrative and nary any conservative saying boo to a goosestepper. Point this out and look at how angry people get; the deaths here are just their opportunistic excuse to shoot the messenger.

Chiming in on the gun debate portion of this thread...

There are few country in the world where the population has the same cultural psyche as most Americans do. We built and populated our country with folks who didn't want to be told what to do. Who believe freedom is an inalienable right and have little, if any, sense of responsibility or duty to society or country or neighbor.

Guns, a pioneering spirit, the concept of individual freedom and power, combined with the idea that anyone can rise to any position so long as they seize that power, are embedded deep within our American soul. This is what gets us in trouble because we forget our rights come with loads of responsibilities. Guns themselves are just tools, but put an idiot drunk on "freedumb," with little regard for others, behind the trigger and bad things will happen.

You can argue that we would be better off without guns, but nobody has ever come up with a realistic plan to disarm America. I would propose that it's an impossible task, short of declaring martial law and starting a civil war. So, we have to deal with the fact that guns are always going to be present in the U.S. and will probably be a problem until we learn to control ourselves.

Teach your children well if you want a better, safer country, like those countries where they have lots of guns but don't shoot each other.

I still have no idea how you can be discharged from the military after 4 months with an honorable discharge. That means that he made it through basic...and then got discharged honorably.

Unclear what combat, if any he would have seen (Iraq pre-2012 was not nearly as bad).

You can get a CAB for having IDF on your convoy, so it likely doesn't mean much.

"The suspect joined the National Guard in Puerto Rico in 2007. In April 2010, he went to Iraq for 10 months. A spokeswoman for the Alaska Army National Guard said Santiago was in the Army Reserves before he joined the guard there in November 2014. Lt. Col. Candis Olmstead said Santiago was discharged in August for unsatisfactory performance.
• The suspect showed up several months ago at the FBI office in Anchorage, law enforcement officials told CNN. He was interviewed and said he was hearing voices in his head, including some telling him to join ISIS. He was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, the officials said. He voluntarily checked himself in, the officials explained"

Based on his military record IEC just posted , he earned his honorable discharge and was in the Army for more than 4 months.

His aunt, according to nj.com, said after a tour of duty in Iraq, he “lost his mind” and was hospitalized at one point for mental health issues.

According to the Associated Press, the Pentagon said he went AWOL several times as a specialist during a stint with the Alaska National Guard and was demoted to private first class. He was given a general discharge, which is different from an honorable discharge.

In November 2016, he walked into an FBI office in Anchorage claiming that he was being forced to fight for ISIS and was sent to a psychiatric hospital, officials revealed.

In 2011 or 2012, he was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations for child porn. Three weapons and a computer were seized, but there was not enough evidence to prosecute, according to law enforcement sources.

Clarifies why he was discharged as an E3, which I thought was a little low given the length of time he was in the ANG.

Very sad :(

Mental health issues need to be better addressed, or this is just going to keep happening.

The voice in his head wanted to do it for ISIS. So propaganda infiltrated his subconscious and actually caused acts of violence.

So this is how terrorism recruiting works. Just find the mentally deficient and exploit.

ISIS seems to be a beacon for people with severe mental health issues. Why is that?

Most mentally ill are typically victims....yet ISIS sympathizers are capable of terrifying violence
