I knew there was a regular outage. I didn't know it was always three days! My main machine may actually have enough work for that, though.
the regular weekly maintenance outage is never 3 days long...it lasts 8 hours at them most, and is usually not even that long. also, in case you haven't noticed, the server is back up...its been back up since 5:00pm EST or so. there is no 3-day outage going on at SETI@Home. where did you get wind of such a long outage anyways?

old message from two weeks ago it looks like but it does imply that 3 day outages are weekly : Weekly Outage and Initial Catch Up
Every Tuesday morning (Pacific time) we begin a 3 day data distribution outage to focus on science processing and development plus any needed systems maintenance. The upload/download servers will be offline during this time. The web site (including the forums) will only be offline during the database maintenance and backup portion of the outage. On Friday, you may experience connectivity issues as the servers catch up with demand. 6 Mar 2012 | 21:41:22 UTC

The GPU Users Group (GPUUG) is way out front. It appears that they are heavy on GPU crunchers. Their lead guy alone has 24 going, with the least one being a GTX 260.................. I'm impressed. 😵

Biodoc LOL
I just went downstairs and found a GTX260 and a spare slot so that about does it for me................ without going out and spending a ton on GPUs.

Lane42 Thanks. Right now I'm wishing it was more. :$
But I'm in good company with you guys. Just lead the way.

You just about need to go into these seti races already at full tilt. partly because of the time it takes to ramp up and partly due to the validation process. It would help (me at least) if the race were a little longer.

Spinning up the second rig today... I am pleasantly surprised at how the first one is working out, and am now willing to pull in a second cruncher...

Those optimized apps are freaking awesome.

On that note - are those folks w/cards like GTX 580's running Multiple WU's concurrently? I only ask because when I investigate some of my WUs, my GTS 250 is "only" taking ~2x as long to get through them as a GTX 580. That is too good to be true, IMHO.

yes, i would imagine most folks w/ a GTX 580 are running 2, possibly even 3 tasks concurrently. in my nVidia box, i'm running a GTX 460 and a GTX 560 Ti, both of which crunch 2 tasks simultaneously. while VRAM is not limiting me from making it 3 simultaneous tasks on either card (both are 1GB models, and an Enhanced/Multibeam task only consumes ~262MB of VRAM), my GPU utilization reaches optimal levels w/ only 2 simultaneous tasks on each card...to be more specific, 1 task at a time on each GPU results in a GPU utilization of ~80%, while 2 tasks at a time result in a GPU utilization of 97-100%.

now just b/c i'm pegged near 100% GPU utilization, its no guarantee that this is the best i can do...only further testing can guarantee that. as someone mentioned earlier in the thread (or perhaps in a different thread...i can't remember), unlike VRAM utilization, actual GPU core utilization does not scale linearly...so for all i know, i could add a 3rd task to the mix on either card and still increase my efficiency, even though my GPU utilization w/ only 2 concurrent tasks suggests otherwise...

@ Sunny

Thanks for the info! I suspected as much 🙂

I did get the 960t/GT 240 rig all Lunatic'd out and in the race, so I'll be adding a bit more to the effort...

Each core helps ... and I just realized that 2 of my comps are down ... but I am back at home Saturday morning and then 8 more CPU-cores + 2 more GPUs will crunch. I´ll see what more can be done to increase output ... 🙂

blckgrffn, my gtx580 looks to be doing around 5-5 and a half min. a work unit.
My gts 450 takes around 15 min. a workunit, so its around 3 times as fast as the 450.

Just in case I am not the only one to be getting the GPU “waiting for GPU memory” message.

It appears to be a problem with older versions of BOINC manager. I just installed version 7.0.25 and I am not getting the message. (yet) We will see what tomorrow brings……………….. but I am hoping this ups my production.

BTW: I also reinstalled Lunatics on top of the new BOINC manager. Don't know if it was necessary, but I did.

This is looking good, though I am slipping down the ranks pretty fast!

Speaking of Team Enterprise, Has anyone heard anything from Smoke lately??

i've had the "waiting for GPU memory" message before too...i can't remember if i had to restart BOINC or the entire computer, but that got rid of the message, and i haven't seen it in quite some time now...i'm still running BOINC v6.12.43. i've seen that message a handful of times...maybe 3 times a year.

...and for future reference, re-running the Lunatics installer after updating BOINC to a new version is not necessary - the installation of BOINC really only affects items in the BOINC program directory, not the BOINC data directory, which is where the Lunatics installer places all of its files. also, while the BOINC installer creates both the BOINC program and data directories, the BOINC uninstaller only removes the program directory - it leaves the BOINC data directory in tact...hence the reason the Lunatics installer need not be run again.

I'm trying to get a third computer up with three gtx260 going... but then my girl comes over and i start playing with her kitty. :whiste:

Nice 🙂

I see that my GTS 250 takes either 1300-1450 seconds (21-24 minutes) or ~240 seconds (4 minutes) depending on the size the WU. That looks to be right in line with where it should be.

That dual GTX 570 box you've got is a beast! Very nice 🙂

Darn distractions! 😛
