The windowing environment (KDE) doesn't matter because the client most often used is a text one run in a console or terminal. The only difference would be if you choose to additionally run "xsetiathome", which will give you the graphics similar to the windoze screensaver. But you would need to carefully read the directions in the readme about how to run that along with the regular text client (the 2 must be run together).
There are actually 4 clients for x86 machines. If you have a new machine (P3, T-bird, & higher) and new version of linux, you can usually run the "i686/gnulibc" version of client. Otherwise for older processors (K62 etc) run the i386 one. Old linux distributions would require running the "static" versions.
