Servicing my Mazda at a Chrysler dealership.

Long story short. I love the dealership that my father gets his SRT8 300c serviced at. They always takes care of him (my father tips them huge amounts of money) and always make time for him for needless things.

I went there the other day with my pops and mentioned that I had to do my service for my car (RX-8) this month sometime. They said they'd take care of it, and get me in and out as soon as I came.

Of course, I'd buy the special oil filter, and oil that I need from Mazda, and take it all to these guys to put it in for me. It will probably cost more than just doing it at Mazda, but I like these guys and don't mind the extra money and tipping them. It would cost me ~$100 after everything (with $25 tip) vs. 60 at Mazda.

Now WHY would I do this? The last time I used Koepell VW/Mazda to service my car - it took 4 hours, they curbed the rims on my GLi, and put a nice ding in my bumper. They also treat me like shit most of the time.

I figure my father throws these guys so much money at Chrysler, that they'd return the favor with me.

How would servicing my car at Chrysler affect my warranty on my car? As long as I keep the service records, I should be good right?

It should have no affect on your warranty. Overpaying will just have an affect on your wallet. $100 for a basic oil change...wow.

It's well over $60 anyway from Mazda, and I'd have to go really out of my way to do it + I'd waste a vacation day (worth more than $100) on the trip. :(

This dealership is a 10 minute ride away.

Hey man...spend your money as you want. I would take 15 minutes of my time and do it myself for $40 or whatever the special oil/filter costs. I understand tipping for good service...it certainly works...but I just can't stomach paying that much for an oil change...such a basic piece of work. If the oil/filter cost that much, I understand...but it doesn't. According to this website:

http://www.rx8club.com/archive/index.php/t-12455.html

Oil filter is 23.51 for 2 pk:
http://www.amazon.com/Mobil-M1-108-E.../dp/B000CIR490

Oil is 33.89 for 6 qts:
http://www.amazon.com/Castrol-CST061.../dp/B001HAQTQQ

That comes to a total of $34.35 for the materials. So you are paying $65 for the work done...seems a bit excessive for what takes less than 15 minutes (the link above noted that this was one of the easiest cars to change oil on).

The series 2 RX-8s use a different filter. I would LOVE to do it myself, but I don't have the tools or (more importantly) the space to do it. Here in NYC, you can get fined heavily for changing oil in public streets. I know one person who got a summons (not sure of the fine) once for changing his oil in the street.

My GLi used to cost $75 to change the oil at the same dealership. So I am looking at $25 more for my 8.

By all means than take it to your favored dealership. Changing oil is as simple as it gets...takes no expertise.

Wow, that's terrible service. My Mazda dealer (Rosen Mazda, in Waukegan, IL) gets me in/out usually in under 40 minutes* and that's including washing my car for me. Cost is $40, but there are often service coupons dropping price to $30 or even $25, and every 5th oil change is free.

*Only once did it go to about 1 hour, but I didn't mind. They have free WiFi in their waiting area, plus the reason it took longer was that a smokin' hot woman pulled in (kinda, she was a noob there and blocked the entrance instead of pulling into it) with her Mazda 3 right in front of me, so she got serviced first. :whiste:

Wow.

Someone has too much money to burn. I'd go buy the oil/filter and drive somewhere to do it myself. I have to do oil changes to a 2007 Civic, 2004 Truck and a Lexus in the next few weeks and I will spend (probably no more than $60 on all three (including the synthetic oil for the Lexus).

I am being sort of harsh actually. They aren't that bad, and the only time I was really pissed was when they curbed my rims and nicked the bumper. I tried to get them to replace the rim, but they refused.

They've been good throughout the years, but lately they suck badly.

Exactly what is this "special oil filter and oil" that your RX-8 requires? And $60 for oil and filter? Are you completely gullible or just careless with your money?

I've found oil filters for your car....brands like WIX, Mobil 1, Purolator Pure One, AC Delco, and Bosch for example.....all over the net and in parts stores for prices around $6-$14. Cannot imagine the OEM Mazda filter is any better than the Mobil 1, WIX, or other brands out there.

Call Mazda and find out.

I have no problem letting a Nissan dealership service my dodge and a Cadillac dealership service my Volvo.

There's no special oil, but my car doesn't use the same oil filter as the older model RX-8 (even though it fits.)

I need one thats double sized or something, and supposedly Mazda has the part alone. I use regular Castrol GTX.

Filter is like 20 bucks + 5 bottles of oil at around 5 bucks a piece. $45 or so.

You can find the OEM part somewhere for sure... Mazda doesn't actually make the filter themselves.

Also, WTF at $100 oil change. Get your hands dirty, son.

The brutal part is, the rotary engines are not suppose to get synthetic, so this is assuming for $100 you are also getting conventional oil :D

Yay for ripoffs!
