So, I'm configuring a PowerEdge 2950 III server for purchase at my work, and we are planning on using it for Virtual servers, kind of a test bed, but a part is for our live content management system, and a demo section for new patches, a test section for development, etc..

To do this we are getting VMWare ESX 3.5i embedded. Long story short, it's just a chip on the board that basically works with a piece of software they use called the "HyperVisor" to allow multiple servers to run at native speeds.

I try to check out and I get an "error: This must be purchased with a ProSupportIT plan".

I call Dell and they tell me due to the "complicated nature of setup and use of this product, we require customers to purchase IT support."

So..you're selling servers...to large institutions, and don't think they have a competent enough IT department to know how to use them?

Makes no sense to me.

/rant over, sorry it sucked.

They sell servers...to large institutions...and still get enough support calls that they decided to require the support plan. Either that or they are just money grubbing as usual.

Are you paying? If not, why do you care how much Dell charges?

Here's something you should know. The warranty covers parts too. Sure you have a competent IT department, but nobody in your IT department can fix a fried CPU. While computers are under IT support at my company, all computer require 3 year vendor warranty (Dell, Apple), not for tech support, but for hardware replacement.

you could always get a non-dell... my company's been HP-exclusive for awhile. I  them, though there's been some talk about switching over to sun depending on how well they run windows.

The basic support (read: free) is 3 years of parts/labor and 5x10 tech support.

The only advantage to ProSupport is 24x7 support and guranteed 2-4 hour turn around.

Also the reason I care is our budget has been super tight this year (read: government funding) and money really is something to watch out for, nobody wants to cut someones job because Dell needs $1700 dollars.

Hmm..I know HP makes a few ProLiants that run VMWare embedded.

We run an exclusive Dell rack, so maybe a lil' arguing can help.

The usual contact is on paternity leave, and the guys who are covering his accounts don't seem to care as much.

I've always been a little confused when I hear this...

First, if you're careful with your own money, why would you waste somebody else's? There's no reason to waste $1700 no matter who is paying for it. You worked hard to earn your paycheck, why should you be able to blow this money that someone else brought in?

Second, a lot of times, people will say they spent a lot because their parents are paying for it. I see the same mentality - it isn't leaving their own bank account, and so they don't care.

When people waste a company's money just because they want to, it bugs me.
