Call me crazy, but maybe explaining why it was dangerous to the student, and then explaining why and when he should get an adult for help disposing something like that, would have been a better option. They threw "reasonable" out the window when they made such a big fuckin' deal of it.

ALL rules have exceptions. There isn't a single possible "crime" that is acceptable in some circumstances. Even killing another person is allowed, if it is in self-defense. Ignoring that plain and simple fact leads to incidents like this one.
