For future information, you should know that it is not considered to be acceptible for a male doctor to perform gynological exams without a nurse present (typically a female nurse.
Hey I saw that on E.R. Mekhi was doing a breast exam on a patient and he had to specifically call a nurse over to "watch". Is this the case with private practices ?

Yep. Male doctors don't want to be accused of doing something sexual or improper during an exam by a woman who is uncomfortable and embarrassed about her body. Lawsuits aren't good for their insurance rates.

EDIT: the above was not directed at you, Tomato. Just a general statement about the issue from the average doctor's presumed perspective.

Oh god, that is not safe. i would seriously get another exam with a trusted Dr. just to make sure everything is ok.

and yea, there always has to be a female RN in the room when a male dr is examining a female patient
good luck

Based on experiences of some of my female friends, I'm going to insist that my (future) wife go to a FEMALE OB/GYN. They almost always seem to be more caring.

you are absolutely right. a female knows how bad am exam can hurt or how having a baby can feel or how uncomfortable a breast exam can be. there is no way a male could know exactly how that feels

Why did he want to do one after just 6 months? Annually is the norm. Also, I've never had pain/bleeding. It's uncomfortable, yes, but nothing like you described.

Thanks for clearing that up. These frequent name changes by some members really screw me up sometimes. I really think the mods should have them put "The user formally known as" in their sig for a period of time after the name change.

Anyway, according to my SO, it may be uncomfortable, but it should never hurt. Bryophyte's advice is pretty much dead-on, except (speaking from the hetero male perspective) there is NOTHING dignified about a prostate exam.

Uhhh.. I read the title and clicked for the hell of it. I didn't read the little tiny summary. I then read on in shock, horror, and confusion.

Shouldn't the death-scrapper thing have been taken from a sterilzed set and then been put aside to go back to the autoclave after being used? I think that is the creapiest part, it went back in the solution like a comb at the barber shop where it came from in the first place.

I've only really bled once. It was scary and it felt like he was scrubbing something very rough around the inside. Like a wire brush or something. In fact it looked like a brush you clean inside of instruments with. I had never had that tool used on me before, but I didn't want to ask. I bled for the next two days. I don't think there was anything normal about my bleeding the way I did. It was the first and only time I went to that doctor for a pap smear. I think it's normal to bleed a little afterward, I usually do, but not if you are bleeding like you said.

All kinds of things jump out at me about your experience.

It is normal procedure to have a pap smear once a year (not every six months, although I suppose a doctor might do that if you have some sort of increased risk or unusual past results).

It is also standard procedure to have a female nurse present if the doctor performing the pelvic is male.

The speculum used by my doctor is disposable. He opens it up out of its package, uses it, and then throws it away. The only reusable thing is the light (with a disposable cover).

In my own experience a little bit of bleeding is normal (and my doctor has said that even a little bit of spotting for a day or so is totally normal), but a lot is unusual. The pap itself has never been painful. For me, the most uncomfortable thing is the feeling that I'm going to fall off the table...

And on a common sense level - don't go back to a doctor you don't like. You said you'd had several problems with him in the past. Why on earth are you still going to him?!

Amanda, that's EXACTLY what it felt like... a wire brush. I was shocked because I was expecting a cotton swab. Do you have any what that was??? I should have asked too... :( :( :(

I ask my gf about it. (Actually I go with her to the doctor when she has a pap). According to her it hurts during the procedure but then she feels better later, she didn't say anything about bleeding though.

bleeding (open wound) + unsterilized equipment = very dangerous.

if i were you i would definately file a complaint and have the sterile equip looked into .. that is VERY dangerous.

No, I don't know what it was. I don't think it's something used by all gynecologists, because he's the only one that's ever done that. If I were you, I'd never go back to that doctor again, and I would advise my female friends to not go to that doctor.
