I would guess it's kinda like in science class when we too a swab of the inside of our cheeks to look at bacteria etc... It shouldn't come out bloody unless: 1) You're in your period. 2) You have some cancer developing there. If none of the above, then that doctor SUCKS! Complain complain complain! And if you have time... lawsuit!

1) Period ended last week, so it wouldn't have started again so soon.
2) I don't think it's cancer, last check all cells were normal. :(

I have the time, but I don't have the money for a lawsuit. Right now, I just want to file a complaint without having it come back to hurt me in the future.

I understand. But make sure you try to send in a complaint, whether by letter, phonecall or even email, as soon as possible. I know when I got screwed over, I waited too long, got lazy and never sent in the complaint. But I still get mad every so often thinking about it and how they're not being responsible for their own actions. So nowadays, if it's serious enough (especially medical related), I make it a top priority to at least let someone know about the problem.

Edit:: Make sure you go to your regular physician to get expert opinions. Otherwise it'll just be your opinion vs the bad gyno's opinion.

my wife told me that it didn't exactly 'hurt' when she went through her pap-smear, it's more like uncomfortable kind of feeling.
hope you're ok.

Is it normal for it to hurt like a b!tch and then to bleed profusely during/after one?

I've never bled during a standard pap smear before, and I've had so many problems with this particular gynocologist in the past. The only reason I went to him yesterday was to get a refill for a prescription, but he insisted on doing a pap smear since it's been 6 months.

The clamp he sticks in and then twists to open things up was DIRTY. He pulled it from a bin full of instruments in (what I assumed was) sanitizing solution, used it on me, and then tossed it back into the bin. WTF WTF WTF??? Some of the instruments were half-in the solution, half-out. I wish I'd brought my digicam so I could've taken a picure of it.

During the pap, he jabbed the swab much too hard, to the point where it hurt (normally, it's supposed to be a soft swab), and his glove came away covered in blood. He kind of chuckled and told me it was normal when I looked shocked.

This same gyno performed a procedure on me in the past that did NOT need to be done after I consulted with a second doctor after-the-fact. Lesson learned... ALWAYS get a second opinion before a doc does anything serious with your body. The procedure he performed on me increases the chance of miscarriage in my future, and if this fvcker messes with my fertility, I'm going to be PISSED.

I'm filing a consumer complaint against him with the Medical Board of California. Can anyone think of anything else I can do?

(I know AT probably isn't the best place for this, but mrsskoorb is a nurse and there are other females here who can probably/hopefully relate)

why the hell would you go to a doctor who you already knew was performing uneccesary procedures?

I really didn't want to go to him for anything, but the gyno I wanted was booked solid for 3 months. Dr. Gold had THREE openings that same day. I figured I'd just go in and get my prescription refilled, but he insisted on a pap since it'd been 6 months. I should have said no, but hell, I'd had paps in the past and they weren't ANYTHING like that. :( How the hell can you fvck up a soft swab? Apparently he found a way to.

saxguy, it definitely was a hurting vs. uncomfortable feeling. I was a little sore yesterday, but I'm okay today... I just hope there are no long-term effects to what he did.

File a complaint with the Cali State Board

I am going to do so right now. I spoke with a few of my coworkers, and everyone seriously doubts my future care will be jeapordized if I file a complaint. Maybe if I keep suing doctors, but if I file 2 complaints about one, I shouldn't be labeled a "problem patient".

Unless you have had an abnormal pap smear, you should not have been told to have one after only six months. That's ridiculous. Annually is normal, sometimes they even recommend less often at certain ages. You have the right to deny any proceedure you don't feel comfortable with. If you see instruments that do not appear to be properly sterilized, say "STOP NOW". Get dressed.

It's not necessarily abnormal to feel pain. Often, I get cramps during/after a pap smear. A small amount of blood is not necessarily abnormal, but a large amount of blood is indicative of some kind of trauma.

Write a letter to the doctor documenting what happened and why you felt it was improper. CC it (and make sure it is obvious to the doctor on the letter that it is cc'd and who is getting it) to your normal gyn, your medical insurance company, whatever organization that doctor is a part of (clinic, whatever), and to whoever is involved with such matters at a state level (medical board, etc). Somebody WILL pay attention to such allegations.

Thanks, TuxDave. I'm filling out that form now (two of them, one for each incident) and will send mail them off today.

Mods, you can lock/delete the topic if you'd like. It's been determined what happened was NOT normal, and a complaint will be filed.

i was sympathetic for you until you said you were thinking about a lawsuit if you had a miscarriage. it is that kind of mentality that makes our society such a turd. after all, it was your fault for not getting a second opinion. that is just plain stupid to not get another perspective. i dont wish bad things on you and i certainly dont hope you have a problem in the future, but i also dont feel bad for you anymore.

Don't see why it would either.

Another thing to consider is to request that that doctor pay for an examination by a third party doctor to make sure you haven't gotten any kind of infection or trauma that will cause you problems in the future.

Are you certain that he pulled the speculum from the solution filled tray and didn't unwrap it from the covering that they normally put the sterilized instruments in?

For future information, you should know that it is not considered to be acceptible for a male doctor to perform gynological exams without a nurse present (typically a female nurse.)

I would sincerely recommend you find a female gyn for the future. I've found that they're much easier to work with and more likely to understand where you're coming from. Easier to talk to and more sympathetic. They're not dealing with women's reproductive issues from an outsider's perspective.

what is pap smear???

They take a few cells from inside the cervix so they can examine them for signs of cancer or abnormal precancerous growth. They normally do this by cranking you open with a speculum and using a swab on the end of a long stick to gather the cells. You are normally lying on your back with your feet in stirups and you knees spread far apart, legs bent. It's about as much fun as a prostate exam, but in a less dignified position.

are you serious? i could have sworn the last time i went there was no female nurse present but i like my ob/gyn. the nurse did set everything up before i had the smear done though.

dez, i posted on your thread you posted elsewhere. this guy is a nut, as most places i've been to (ucla student health and this place) uses plastic speculums they take right out of a sealed package.

and you should not be bleeding for a pap smear, esp when all it is is a swabbing.

You have gotten excellent advice from Bryophyte!!

I have pain from Pap Smears all the time. I have never experienced prolonged pain, or bleeding however. I would suggest that you see another doctor, pronto. Just to make sure that everything is ok. That, imho, should be the primary concern right now, and lawsuits/complaints can come later.

See your regular doctor or, if you feel more comfortable, a new doctor in a different office. Explain your concerns and see what they have to say. Let it be known, immediately that you will, never, in any circumstances see this particular doctor. Do not be afraid of being labeled a problem patient. You should have complete faith in and privacy with your normal doctor. If s/he cannot understand your feelings, it is time for a new doctor.

If, God Forbid, there is a problem with what this doctor did, you can expect him to pay for all treatments regarding any follow ups to get you better.

Good Luck... I hope all works out ok!
:)

Hey I saw that on E.R. Mekhi was doing a breast exam on a patient and he had to specifically call a nurse over to "watch". Is this the case with private practices ?

Very serious. Most places make it SOP and most male doctors I've gone to have commented on it ("wait a moment while I get a nurse, we always have a nurse present for pelvic exams" or something like that.)

A trace amount of blood isn't necessarily bad. Sometimes if you're tense, the speculum or swab might cause a *trace* amount of blood, but anything more than a trace of blood-tinged mucus is something to be concerned about.
