The show was buffy in space, basically. Fun and stupid, hardly thought-provoking, campy, etc. I enjoyed it as a popcorn type show, but it's not the groundbreaking masterpiece ATOTers claim it to be. The movie was kind of disappointing.

Did you actually watch the whole series or just a few episodes? The series was excellent. If you just watched the first couple episodes (which set you up for the rest of the series), you would see how goo dit really was.

I dunno... I watched the entire series + the movie and I pretty much agree with Torpid's assessment.

I watched the whole series and in fact own it on dvd. A lot of the major plot lines were recycled cliches. Sometimes there were fun twists on the cliches, like the "I accidentally married her because I didn't understand their alien ritual" episode that's in all sci fi and even some westerns. But still, the basis for even that episode was a recycled cliche.

I did enjoy it or I wouldn't own it, but I don't think it deserves to be put on the pedestal that some people put it on.

I actually didn't like Buffy or Angel that much. I watched it with friends, but I thought it had too much Angst in it. Firefly had less of it, and what it had, the captain romantic interest was done well enough to be mature and less teenage angst.

I haven't seen enough of buffy. I do think firefly is better than buffy based on the bits and pieces I have seen, though. But the buffy fans seem to like it for the same reasons... witty dialogue and fun twists on top of layers and layers of cliche.

I only seen like three episodes and the movie and was hooked right away, but havent had time to rent it. I don't if Sci-Fi still plays the episodes.

I thought the Captain was funny.. I though he was married to Zoe but the movie corrected that for me.

The whole series will correct that for you too.

You should also watch the rest of the series. There are some completely great episodes.
"Our Mrs. Reynolds".... Special, Special Hell. You will definitely crack up at that phrase once you watch it.

My personal favorite is A Man Named Jayne.

Is that the one with the statue and tar pits? If so I remember that being my least favorite.

Great show, great movie. I didn't think it was anything like Buffy or Angel, which is good because both of those shows were kind of lame, I thought. I enjoyed the dry sense of humor of Firefly, it was slapstick, no canned laughter, yet it still made you chuckle.

Shame that Fox killed it, but they've done such things in the past. With any luck it'll come back in the future, but it's really doubtful. I can still dream that HBO picks it up or something of the like.

Serenity was my favorite movie last year. I got hooked on the series after it was cancelled, and thought it was a great change of pace from most Sci-fi series on TV.

I have a cool Serenity poster, bought in London, in my movie room that has River holding 2 blades in a martial arts pose, with a nice explosion in the background and the rest of the crew holding their own weapons. Great poster :)

Hm... maybe. I liked cowboy bebop a LOT more than firefly. Much more creative, far less cliched.

awesome show and great movie.

A little campy, but that's OK with sci-fi. Great characters.

Shame that it's over.

This pretty much sums up my feelings. I loved the show, and I thought the movie was good too, but it seemed a little darker than the series. I appreciated some of the lightheartedness of the series that wasn't entirely present in the movie.

Either way, we need moar Firefly :(

Thats pretty much what I thought when I watched the movie. I couldn't believe that everyone was making a big deal out of it. I might have found it enjoyable if I was 9 or 10, though.

The movie wasn't very good - in particular it totally minimized the character of Jayne, who is probably the best thing about the series.

The series is excellent. Maybe more than excellent - treading into Babylon 5 sci-fi greatness. Glad to own the DVD set. :)

One question, which one comes first. The show or the Movie?

The series came first. The movie takes place several months after the events in the final episode of Firefly.

Supposedly, Joss Whedon plans to make two more movies, but it was a while ago that I heard those rumors and haven't heard anything since.

The movie flopped because fanboys hated how some of the characters ended up... so I don't think another movie is coming out. :(

I would have been all for sequels though. The movie was awesome!

It flopped? Was it even in theatres? I didn't hear anything about the movie or the show until it was all over because there was no advertising :(

You can really watch them independently. You just won't know as much about the characters if you watch the movie first.

Noted though that the movie takes place pretty much after the series. Although they don't really refer to anything from the series.

Your first line tells him that if he doesn't watch the series, he won't know much about the characters. Your second says that they don't really refer to anything from the series.

Are you kidding me? Watching the show before the movie helps you understand it infinitely more. They refer to stuff from the show every second.
