I think it's funny coming from the same people who probably get out of their car at the commissary and survey the area in order to plan a salute free route to the front door (like me.)

This. And it is officers and enlisted alike. They both go out of their way to avoid saluting unless they are some high visibility positions, in my experience. A base commander isn't planning a salute free route, he is the commander, you should feel honored to have seen him!

Don't see what service or lack thereof has anything to do with it. I served and it doesn't bother me, but I can understand why someone else might be annoyed.

OP has chosen to make this into some sort of story about how little respect the President has for the military. I think its fair to ask if he even has experience on which to base his belief that it doesn't show respect.

The Base Commander has his own parking spot right by the front door in order to minimize his exposure to salutes.

By "his own parking spot" you mean parked right in front of the door, in the lane right? Because, that spot marked "Base Commander" was always empty in my experience, regardless of whether or not the base commander was there. =)

I am a veteran.

I dont care.

Obama is a piece of shit even though he didnt serve.

Bush is a piece of shit even though he did serve.

Didn't Obama get a bunch of shit for not holding an umbrella over a marine as well? Or something stupid like that?

If you're looking for validation on just how much Obama doesn't respect the troops, you'll likely find it in a bunch of mundane shit nobody (even current and former troops) find validation in.

Perhaps the OP simply suffers from low blood pressure and uses this manufactured outrage as a free alternative to medication for raising his BP.

If you're looking for validation on just how much the troops don't respect Obama, you'll find it in the lack of applause when he speaks at service academies (compare to GWB's thunderous applause and cheering by cadets) and the fact that when Obama visited Bagram (the largest base in Afghanistan) troops had to be ordered to attend his pep talks instead of vying to get in like they did with GWB.

Gotta agree here.

I knew some buffoon would be in here posting about this today. Not surprised to see who; and look: late last night--even ahead of the news cycle for this latest Obama disaster.

😀

Outrage is a form of entanglement and therefore not bound by the speed of light. 😉

Obviously you have not dealt with a 2nd luey, or a new west pointer with no combat experience. I was written up for failing to render a salute to an officers POV, (private owned vehicle) when he approached from behind. Claims to have seen me glance over my shoulder. Was also chewed out for not bringing my squad to attention, and rendering a salute when an officer came jogging by. Anyone here wanna tell me why this officer was wrong?

This thread reminds me, when I was in basic, one of friends won an annual 5k (for his age group, at least) and received a trophy from the base commander. The commander handed him the trophy, and as is customary, my friend saluted. However, he had the received the trophy in his right hand and hadn't didn't know what to do. So, he saluted with his left hand. Omg, the outrage! He was promptly kicked out of the military for such insolence! Or, rather, everyone (including the base commander) had a good laugh at how this idiot just screwed up in the most public of forums. He corrected him politely and the ceremony went about without further incident. Later, he received quite an ass chewing, but that wasn't anything outside of the norm. Don't have your shoes properly aligned at the foot of your bed? Ass chewing. Didn't get on your face fast enough after being told "On your face!"? Ass chewing.

The only people offended by an improper salute rendered by Obama are people looking to be offended by Obama, for any reason.

The only butter bars I ever encountered were acquisition officers, otherwise known as failed pilots. >_< They had already given up on life and what it meant to be an officer.

LOL, our huey fly boys were all Warrants, and were totally cool, a bit crazy also,---- "Hey guys, lets trim some trees".

Just a reminder: The President is more important then those Marines.

From Terminal Lance:
Yes, the President of the United States of America had a boot Corporal hold an umbrella for him while he gave a speech.

The reactions were interesting because people let their political butthurtedness flow into their opinions on the matter. People seem to forget that we’re Marines, and this is exactly the kind of shit that Marines do. Somehow, holding an umbrella for the President and the Turkish Prime Minister is seen as demeaning, while all of the other bullshit that Marines do every day is not. I find it entertaining to see Marines on my Facebook page saying things like, “I would have told him to fuck off and hold his own umbrella.”

No you wouldn’t.

Shut up.

We’re Marines, if the President of the fucking United States asks you to hold a fucking umbrella, you hold a fucking umbrella. As well, the day I give a shit about a boot Corporal holding an umbrella is the day I’ve forgotten what the Marine Corps is. Honestly, holding an umbrella for the President is probably the least demeaning thing I could imagine doing as a Marine, as opposed to the other bullshit I had to do every day. No one would think twice about asking a boot to police call cigarette butts across the entire base at 5am, but the minute this boot has to hold an umbrella for the Commander in Chief, people get upset.

He’s the President, he rates an umbrella.

Get over it.
