Horrible comparison... the GTX 580 was a nonsense card when you could get a 6970 for almost 200$ less, with 90% of the performance (unless you want the absolute best, in which case the price is irrelevant anyway)

The hd6970 was, at no time, $200 less than a gtx580. It was $379 at launch, and hovered pretty close to it's MSRP for the life of the card.

speaking of driver problems. How is the HD 7xxx series with CF? It sucked with the 5xxx series, then was awesome with the 6xxx series...

7970 or 7950 CF owners?

I think its good, the release driver - The cd driver (released dec 2011) didn't have proper CF support for many games but all the issues that i'm aware of have been fixed since rc11 (1-19 web driver) I think AMD took some of the criticism to heart, they even had day 0 multi gpu support for ME3 and Alan Wake (which nv still doesn't have a profile for I don't think). At least, all of my games in my origin/steam libraries work great in dual gpu mode.

Its just hilarious how some fanboys here actually expected Kepler to deliver better performance for less... Its NEVER happened in the history of Nvidia high end cards and it never will, as long as JHH is the CEO at least

Yeah! How dare JHH try to make money!. (Looks at Nvidia financial performance vs AMD over last couple of years)

Looks like JHH knows how to run a company a lot better then the revolving door of morons that have been steering the red team ship. Looks like they might have finally found a decent one with Rory.

Its funny how the argument shifts, :D

Then the 7970 comes along, beats the 580 by more than 10%, and costs basically the same, and ZOMG, AMD MUST BE PUNISHED

Seriously? You cant see the difference here? Luckily for us, AMD will definitely lower the prices right away if Kepler is any sort of competition, because thats what they do

Thanks for proving my point... People complain about the GTX 580's price. Then, when AMD releases a card that also has high prices, they claim AMD can do that because they are just matching Nvidia's ridiculous price. My question to you is, how do you NOT see this as hypocrisy?

Not sure what you're expecting, seems like you've made up your mind before seeing the product. Good luck and have fun with your upcoming upgrade I guess?

Just a fyi, Nvidia has it's own share of driver problems, but I find that their control center has a better user interface.

True, true, fair comment, based on lots of rumor I know, but if it lives up to close to what is being said (which with this tech is usually not too far off), you're right I'm sold. I also agree, any manufacturer has issues with drivers, but seems popular opinion is Nvidia has better, especially with SLI vs cf, and that has been my experience personally. Honestly if price is close and performance is close/ideally better, 3D Vision is my number 1 seller as I want 3D, which may exclude a lot of people, but that plus supposedly lower power draw and heat, and the odd title with physx- well theres a few benefits up on the competition which I currently use and do respect/enjoy.

Remeber though, without these 2 competing companies we would be in the dark ages if there was a monopoly, so I hope they both keep competing vigorously, and I hope the two tribes keep going to support them.

And really the whole idea behind the smaller chips when you strip it all away, lower heat and lower power with more performance- as is the history of PC hardware, remember the amazing room sized computers 40 odd years ago? I know you can get 1000+ PSU's but where do you draw the line, no one wants a huge power bill (australia's power companies are getting ridiculous) and to use their machine as a heater. Ideally low low power, silent and as powerful as a Ferrari right?

Appreciate the comment on my post Arzachel :)

Had to have my 2c worth. Just hope I'm not disappointed when concrete specs/benches are released as you say.

If you're going 3d vision, investigate LightBoost, really helps with some limitations -- dimming -- and pretty seamless and like passive now in this regard. Also, based on how bright things get with LightBoost one can reduce the contrast and still receive bright and vivid colors, while reducing CrossTalk noticeably, which is the other limitation.

I did mean that sincerely, because tinkering and watching the progress of tech is the reason we're here. Speculation, while fun if you don't take it too seriously, is just sides. Seems like less people are getting interested in this hobby, so anyone willing to take their time and customize their hardware is welcome :) It would be nice, if there where a third major GPU manufacturer, but at least it's not a monopoly.

Lastly, you can blame TSMC for the trickle supply of Radeon HD 7000 cards and the no GTX 6XX cards of any kind.

Yeps, that is probably, at the very least, a decent chunk of the higher prices. To bad AMD/Nvidia have no one else to go to and are stuck with them. Maybe GF will be able to be another option in the future.

And I have a strong feeling that NVIdia is having trouble with the full kep. So they are asking this coming 680 to force it to compete with the 7970. Otherwise they would have NOTHING for many months to come.

So, in the end, nvidia either could do this or give AMD 6 more months of lead time. I'm glad the did this, to at least have another option out there....

Performace per watt is important. However, there are more important things like:

- oc headroom
- operating temperatures
- price

If Radeon beats Geforce in any two ^, I'd get them instead.

NVIDIA is in no hurry.
They run their own 2 year GPU schedule...but not all have catched on to this "new" idea.

Some will never catch on...and whine about X GPU being "late"...despite the 2 year cycle being public knowlegde *sigh*

Wait, so let me get this straight.

GK104 was never supposed to be the 'high-end' GTX, this was originally planned for the GK110. But because the cheaper to produce (and much better for business margins) GK104 is competitive with the 7970, it is now dubbed the '680'. So nvidia's true high end will not see the light of day and we end up paying a premium on a card that should have been much cheaper to begin with, lovely.

At least this is my take on the whole situation. Consumers lose in this scenario; I want a true 580 replacement. :/

This is all based on the recent articles on Fudzilla concerning margins and performance of the GK104.

Gotta love those apple loyalists so full of hot air that they make blanket statements with no proof :D

History teaches you a lot.
8800GTX > 2900 XT
GTX280/285 > 4870/4890
GTX 480 > 5870
GTX 580 > 6970

So presuming GTX 680 to be faster than 7970 is a logical conclusion based on history

GK110 is a dual GK104 board. GK100 was scrapped, GK112 is a product in the pipeline. Will be released late Q3 or Q4 *if* there are no ES issues.

Guess you bought into nvidia's marketing hype machine as well. Its okay, just wait until Q4 for GK112. It is nowhere near complete, but i'm sure nvidia marketing will make you believe its right around the corner. Just like the GTX 480 was right around the corner and 5 times faster than the 5870. Remember what happened there 7 months later? JHH proclaims GTX 480 5x faster than 5870, then real world benchmarks show it to be 10% faster while running twice as hot and using twice as much power.

You're right. History does teach us a lot.

My hats off to the (scumbags) in nvidia's marketing team however. Here we have people convinced that the GK104 would be a 299$ 7970 killer, the fool is the people who bought into their marketing hype. Now their marketing department is effective, GTX 480 pre launch happening all over again :D I predict it will be faster in some apps, slower in others.

Its funny to see marketing continually being bought into, just like another fruit vendors fan base. Enjoy.

Why should I love you? :hmm:
And who is making "blanket statements" right now? :sneaky:

I'll be back through later this evening. Any posts added to this thread which I deem to be baiting, insults, trolling, etc will be sanctioned as warranted.

It is getting out of control in here.
