So what should I expect in selling a videocard to someone in Canada? I know that international dealings are typically against policy but if he's paying first then there shouldn't be a problem on my end.

Right?

I have bought and sold with you whacky Americans in FS/FT and there have not been any problems (I did get charged brokerage once though). I recommend using USPS as they are the most reliable (in my experience) and they don't charge brokerage like UPS.

You'll need to decide whether to lie on the customs form that the sale is a "gift."

If you decide not to, you need to warn the buyer aboot this before closing the sale so they know that duties will ensue.

(1) Ship via USPS to avoid being billed for customs.

(2) As far as I know Paypal buyer/seller protection doesn't apply when shipping outside the USA.

I wouldn't lie about it. Even though the chances of being caught if you mark it as a gift with a value of less than $50 (?) are essentially negligible and everyone else does, Canada needs its tax revenue.

canadians close to the border are better off getting a PO box in a US bordertown and driving it back. often times the CBSA will just wave you through if it's like $100

Can't get a USPS PO Box without a physical address in the US, and it has to be one you can prove it yours, with a bill or a DL or something with the address on it. Maybe you can get a UPS box or something though.

Always use USPS, always tell the buyer that you're putting the selling price on as value, and that there MAY be charges. If they don't like that they can stick to domestic sellers.

USPS all the way, haven't done any cross country trading in over a year though. I wouldn't think it has changed much though

I remember my first online sale was to someone in Canada. It was 1998 and I sold him "Cruisin' USA" for N64 for $7... of course I didn't put things together and realized:

A) Shipping costs suck. It cost about $5 to send it, bringing my profit to $2

B) The buyer was an idiot and paid in Canadian dollars. Bringing my actual profit to about -$1.00

C) Banks charge a fee to cash Canadian money orders here in the states... and that cashing a $7 MO would actually take about 2 weeks and yeild about $2, but that I had to take it to a main office to do that... bringing my profit to -$12 (-$7 for the game, -$5 for shipping. +$0 for the money order I ripped up and threw away.) :(

Pwned. My $12 lesson was that it's easier to just not send things over the border unless the buyer chooses to take on all responsibilities for customs, shipping charges, and will pay in $US. My advice is if you want to trade over borders, don't find these sorts of things out on an expensive item.
