Question Selling my old 4930K. Should I get the 3600 or 2700?

Hi,

Currently I'm running:
i7 4930K (4,1GHz @ 1.2V)
ASUS P9X79 MOBO
8GB (2X4) DDR3 @ 2133MHz XPG
H105 AIO WC

I'm considering selling this combo, and buying an octa-core from AMD instead. The R7 2700 really caught my eye.

Reason why I'm thinking of this jump is:
Lower TDP
Lower temps
Higher IPC (both single + multi core than Ivy-Bridge E)
DDR4 3200MHz over my 2133MHz (seeing as Ryzen benefits from faster RAM. Some games like higher RAM frequencies too)
Air cooler over a liquid cooler for less noise

I’m thinking of going with the Ryzen 7 2700 because it’s an 8C/16T chip. 4930K / R5 3600 both are 6C/12T. I think the extra cores/threads will make the CPU stay relevant for a longer time, and that will make the upgrade more significant.

I don’t want to upgrade my CPU for at least 4-5 years. I want to buy the CPU that is more future-proof.

I think the only reason that my 4930K is still (somehow) relevant is the fact that it has 2 extra cores.

So, what do you guys think? Are these valid reasons to go from an Intel Hexacore to an AMD octacore, or should I just keep my 4930k?

Get an AMD 5900X for $549 USD (or equivalent) when it comes out, then you'll be set for another 5 years.

If you want 4-5 year "future proof" from now then you don't want Zen+ (2700)

You want at least 3600/3700 and b550 board so you can also have PCIE4. ...you should definitely try and wait a few more weeks when the 5x series (Zen 3) is available, but those MSRP as announced are significantly higher than previous/current generations AMD chips (though it certainly looks as though they are completely superior to Intel now, in every measurable way, so that expectedly comes with a price).

Availability is also going to be a problem for the first couple of months, but at least would be a better time to look at the 3600/3700 parts. --though prices should start falling now as retailers are going to be clearing inventory ahead of the big Zen 3 release on the 5th.

Wait for the 5000 chips to come out then get a 3600/3700 as the prices will drop quite a bit more then. That plus a B550 board with good VRM/heatsinks should hold up well.

After the Ryzen 3000 series launched last year, I picked up my 2700X Anniversary Edition CPU and Asus ROG X470 motherboard for $339 (and free game vouchers) at Newegg, which had a large combo discount to move the "old" CPUs.

It makes no sense to be deciding between a Ryzen 3600 and 2700 a month away from AMD launching their new 5000 series CPUs. You are basically throwing money away by not waiting.

This! Kind of just like... how I bought a GTX 1660 ti (EVGA XC model) for $239.99, when the RTX 3050/3060 will be launching in Nov.-Dec. (rumored).

I think you forgot to tell us what the use of the computer will be. For me id wait until 2021 to see intel's next chip, it should be the good one right? I upgraded to a 3600/x470 tiachi ultimate for 400 when they came out gave my mom my 2700x with a 100$ x470 msi gaming. Might just skip the next upgrade for myself and give it straight to my son since he games. Been waiting forever for the new cpu's to come out might as well wait a little longer.

If it is an either or choice and not knowing what you intend to do with it.
3600 is the clear choice, newer design, much better memory compatibility and generally better/cooler.
As what others have said if it is not critical to replace now I’d wait a bit and see what happens with the 5000 chips. Admittedly those are slightly more expensive but anyways we will likely see discounts on old stock.

As of now I feel 3700x is where the value is but I do have a micro center close by

From currently known leaks and some real information, Intel has no chance of anything decent, at least better than Zen 3 in 2021. I am sure someone will disagree.

I've got my eyes on some (three) 3700X CPUs, maybe next month or whenever Ryzen 5000-series actually release, and they mark down Ryzen 3000-series CPUs. Reason being, I bucked the trend, and "invested" (well, $140 ea.) in (three) ASRock Fata1ity Professional X370 boards, which, probably WONT be getting Zen3 BIOS updates (but we can hope!), because they have integrated 5GbE-T ports. Of course, last night, I found some PCI-E 2.0 x8 HPE dual 10GbE-T (Intel X540 chipset, so well-supported), for $65 refurb. So I may say "screw it", and just go all 10GbE-T for my workstations and network clusters anyways. Which would open the possibilities back up of getting some B550 boards, I like the Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 boards.

wow we have zen 3 benchmarks and alderlake benchmarks to compare?? im going to say impossible since i have not even seen zen 3 benchmarks, maybe you could just post a link when you say such things :)

wonder what rez/refresh we will get to see.

I did not say benchmarks, I said some known information and some leaks. And we do have Zen3 benchmarks, but they are not independent.

soooo where are the zen3 benches? The ones from amd presentation slides that say its 50% faster then the 3900xt?

Im most likely going to buy another amd chip for my next desktop but im excited to see what both sides will bring, maybe it will be 2022 before intel decides to put something good out? i thought alder was going to be good /shrug i dont even play games or render, just want best bang for buck for my sons next pc. the 3600 for less than 200$ will most likely still be best bang for $$ with a 120$ asrock mobo and 100$ bdie 16gb kit.

Yes it was from the presentation. I would have to look , but I think it was 26% faster than a 3900XT (by memory).

I don't know why you have to be so confrontational, as its in the Zen 3 release thread.

I've been happily running a 2700X (which I'm getting rid of now) but if I were looking to upgrade from an older platform, the 3k or 5k series Ryzen chips really stepped up the efficiency and IPC from the 2k versions.
As others have said though...a bit foolish to purchase RIGHT now. Wait a few weeks if you're able.

im not the one sure about anything, i didnt think the amd slides constitute benchmarks (its all marketing ploy every company does this) . I was hoping there was some real benchmarks. Looking at the slide now it says 50% faster in lol (league of legends), and 5% faster in battlefield v etc etc. Ya it sounds impressive faster then the 3900xt.. but what are the real numbers, im not sure of anything and am excited to see intels chips as well. of course the chip is a 800$ chip and the op is looking at 120$ chips, so there's that..

OP, you may also want to consider getting a used Xeon E5 1680v2 if you can get one for a good price. It would be an 8 core drop in upgrade, and it is unlocked like the 4930k is, so you could OC it as well. This could hold you off for a while till the 5800X comes down in price, or the release of Rocket or Alder lake.

I have the LE version of that board, and neither one has official support for the 1680v2, it ends with the 1660v2.

I am surprised his i7 4930K is only running@4.1, the average OC on that cpu is 4.5 Which at that speed or better, with a couple more sticks of ram for quad channel, is still no slouch for gaming. Of course if he wants to sell, these boards still fetch a very good price. I swapped the 4820k that was in it for a $46 2650v2 that hums along@3.5 nice and smooth. It is for VMs mostly, or I would have probably left the i7 in it for gaming. Since it was hitting 4.56 with no effort, and probably has a couple100MHz left in it, with a better cooler.

If gaming and future proofing is your main concern you should stretch you budget for the new Ryzen 5600X at least. With a B550 motherboard and 3200 CL14 RM or preferably 3600 C16 RAM if you can. It will wipe the floor with the Ryzen 7 2700 in CPU limited games and even beat it in multithreaded apps despite having 2 fewer cores.

Good advice no doubt. But honestly, I would like to know what games the OP plays, at what res and refresh on what GPU. Unless he is competitive e-sport and fps at high refresh, what he has now is great. Just add more ram for quad channel and because 8GB is not enough anymore.

I will hold off on voting until such details emerge.
