Some of them have a bagging area at the end. You have to place each item on there **AFTER** you have already scanned it. Now, it you have a bunch of bulky items (such as TP), this can require you to make a large mound.

That's how it typically works at stores like Home Depot, but at the grocery stores around here that have them (Weis in particular) there's a belt with a sensor that checks each item as it passes under. When the bagging area gets too full, it tells you to bag some of your items. I didn't have to screw it up more than once to realize that if you scan an item before the previous item passes under the sensor, it makes you rescan both items.

Edit: (The ones at the Giant I used to go to on the way home from work had it the way you describe)

I use self checkout lanes all the time, rarely have a problem.

No, really, if you're concerned about whether or not you're going to be getting any after any given event, you need to re-check your priorities.

I'm just messing with you since you said you were messing with her ;)

I refuse to use them.

I want a HUMAN thats getting paid to work to check my groceries, merchandise.

I dislike the highway scanners, that are taking away peoples jobs too.
[ i agree the Easy pass EZ pass? saves time, but dislike them]

{Toll road, bridges, tunnels, Easy pass, etc...}

I don't like having to punch the numbers on a touch tone phone, when I call
a bank/ business for information,
I want to talk to a Human.

Strange, Albertsons is very different. You scan each item, bag it and when the bag is full you place the bag into your cart. There is no belt.

Thanks for bringing some grammar to the argument.

Like it or not, machines/computers will take over sooner or later. Its not much we can do about it....cashiers will be a thing of the past once the UPC is replaced and the self check machines become better and better. Whats the point of having a cashier that doesn't need to scan the barcode?

I am giving cashiering 10 more years...afterwards, there will be no one to take your money except a machine (if that, maybe you just walk out the store with merchandise and on your way out everything is scanned+you. Then the money is deducted from your account). :( :)

Seriously, I don't see it happening. All this fancy-pants RFID crap can be abused and hacked and jammed by just about anyone who can solder. The technology is great as it is for lots of things, but consider that credit cards only JUST reached their full potential. These technologies have a lot of growing left to do before any adoption of them for purchasing will be anything other than ill-advised, dangerous, and stupid.

And before you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about... I did some evaluation work on an RFID inventory system, and determined that even for our relatively minimal security concerns, it was way too damned iffy.
