I have used one once. There aren't many stores here that have it. I wish more did. :)

I'll use them if I'm not buying a lot. If I'm buying a full load of groceries, it's easier to just go through a regular line and have them bag up the groceries and put them in the cart rather than doing it myself. If I can carry it in one of those hand baskets, then I'm more likely to use the self checkout.

just think of it as transfer of jobs opportunities from Grocery store to those machine makers.

I only use them if I have less than 3 items b/c most of the time the people in front of me have no idea how to use them.

I used one just yesterday, thinking it might save me a minute or two of time in line... instead, when it tried to eject my change, the bill dispenser was jammed and I got to wait 15 minutes for someone to come help me. Naturally, she was poorly trained or new and had to go get someone else, which took another 5 minutes. Argh.

Used to use them all the time when the average idiot was scared to use them. Now it is easier to go to a cashier. They can check a line of people out in the time it takes one dumbass to use the self check.

Also why don't people think about sh!t like this when they say there aren't enough jobs. There are now 2-3 cashiers in a store where there was once 4-5 and my groceries aren't any cheaper.

That's why I refuse to use them.

The first time I saw that at Home Depot had gotten rid of all but one of the cashiers was also the last time I've gone into that store. I've also pretty much changed supermarkets because of this issue also.

It's funny how all you computer guys are upset about losing tech jobs to other countries and yet are more than willing to help companies screw other people out of their jobs.

Agreed. Sure some jobs are made for the machinists/programmers, etc, but those jobs are most likely in China/Korea... More damn outsourcing :|

No.

And I'll tell you why.

They offer no discount on the prices for the decrease in service I experience. Were I offered a discount, I would think about it. But why should I do more work and not even save money? What is the advantage of that? There is none.

So if I'm going to pay the same, I'm going to get full service.

It's like asking me to pay full service prices at a gas station, yet pump my own gas.

I use them when:

I don't have many items
There is nobody ahead of me
I'm using a credit/debit card
And I'm not buying beer

Otherwise, I just find the checker with the shortest line...

I wish my grocery store had a self-checkout, because I'm always stuck in line behing 85 year old coupon clippers and check writers.

I consider the amount of time spent not standing in line as my discount.

I use them most of the time but will go through a checkout line if it is shorter. Also when I'm buying a lot of groceries at Albertson's I use their scanner while shopping and load up the info in the self-checkout and pay.

Actually, it seems to take longer because there is always an idiot ahead of me who can't use it.

To be honest, I think people think it's faster simply because they are busy rather than standing around while someone else does the work.
