Seeking WASD key advice

I'm still new to PC gaming. I'm enjoying some older games (fear, far cry, hitman2) but I'm still slow with the left-hand keys.

Assume I've got fingers 5 (pinky) thru 2 (index) over keys A-F respectively. To go forward I move 4 up to W; to go fast I move 5 down to Shift. So far no problem. But if I also want to simultaneously strafe left, I need to hit A. Can't to it.

Am I supposed to move all fingers left so I get 5=Shift 4=A 3=W ? If so, after I finish the run, do I move them back to A-F position?

Or should I just buy a $10 gamepad?

Use your middle finger for W, your ring finger on A, and your pinky on shift.

Your default position should be middle finger on W, ring finger on A, index finger on D.

exactly how it's done

This isn't rocket science...

Finger 1 (thumb) on the space bar
2 on D
3 on S/W
4 on A
5 (pinky) on shift

Your 2, 3, and 4 fingers don't leave WASD during movement.

Isn't that a bit unnatural? I mean your fingers naturally form an upwards arc making wasd ideal but xasd?

I have heard of ESDF but never XASD before.

XASD sound REALLY strange, i have some friends that play TFGH because its in the middle of the keyboard and they have access to nearly every key with 1 hand

i play WSAD but i reverse A and D so D turns me lest and A turns me right

yes i know thats fed up and backwards but its how i do it and it works for me

My setup must be extremely weird.

E - strafe left
R- Move Back
T - strafe right
F - Duck
Spacebar - jump
A - chat
Right Mouse - Move Forward
Left Mouse - Fire
G - Use
H - Reload
S - Team Chat
X - Chat
W - Lean Left
Y - Lean Right
Mouse Key 4 - Zoom
Mouse Key 5 - Walk

Plus several other keys designated.

I use 2468 with the keyboard pushed to the side. You get the best of both worlds that way, plenty of keys as well as properly aligned ones.

 And again. I use the 7-4-1-0 numpad keys for quick toggle weapons.

I couldn't imagine trying to use the arrow keys. Not enough keys in the general area for more advanced game bindings.

I keep my thumb across the spacebar with the end on C.

for me I actually like to use TFGH as my movement...just because its in the middle and i can hotkey alot around the movement...for instance FEAR...i had mouse 1 fire and mouse 2 slowmo...r was reload, y was use, c was crouch, n was zoom, j was grenade, d was melee...

to me it just felt natural for me to be in the middle of the keyboard than on the side

Arrow keys all the way.

Since they are separated from other keys, I can reposition my
hands quickly to suit the use of movement and whichever keys I
need to hit at that moment.

You're all confused.

Games are best played with RDFG 😉

Pwns for UT series, etc. where binds become life or death.

I dunno about you guys, but WASD feels so comfortable now that any other combination just feels STRANGE. Maybe there's a 0.1mm difference in spacing between WASD and ESDF, but I can feel it with my left hand and it just feels STRANGE. Anyone else like this?

I used to use the arrow keys and had myself convinced that I liked it better than WASD. Then one day I switched because I was playing a game that needed more keys, and I haven't gone back to the arrow keys. WASD is so much more comfortable.

You scare me..

That is so awkward! But whatever suits you best! 😀
