Seeking WASD key advice

up arrow - forward
down arrow - backwards
left mouse - strafe left
right mouse - strafe right
ctrl - fire
left arrow - crouch
right arrow - alternate fire
enter - reload
shift - jump
mouse scroll - weapon switch
delete, end, page down, 0, 1, 4, 7, mouse 3/4/5 - depends on the game

I have plenty of controls for complex games. Perfectly comfy for long gaming (I cock the keyboard to the side a little bit).

 And again. I use the 7-4-1-0 numpad keys for quick toggle weapons.

I couldn't imagine trying to use the arrow keys. Not enough keys in the general area for more advanced game bindings.

I beg to differ?

ctrl
shift
enter
backslash
backspace
insert
delete
home
end
pageup
pagedown
and the whole num pad.

all of this with the benefit of having empty space to relocate your primary movement keys.

What I don't understand is how people use ctrl or z for crouch. Pressing Z means you can't press A for strafe left. Ctrl is uncomfortable to hit with your pinky.

I use caps lock for crouch, and alt for prone.

You don't find buttons like backspace, insert, home, page up, and the whole numpad really far away? It seems like it would lower reaction time. And how do you move while pushing one of these buttons if you have to move your hand so much?

I dont move, most of my binds are stationary binds.

Anything I have to do while moving is bound close: ctrl (crouch), shift (jump), delete (drop/pickup weapon), kp_ins (prone), mouse 4 and mouse 5 (usually voice chat, but nades in games like COD4).

every other key is either a buy key or a radio message for CS/DOD, or a toggle for something which doesn't require me to keep it pressed.

To be honest, I use the arrow keys as well, could never get used to WASD.

I have a very unique key bind setup, and it takes awhile to configure each game to my liking.

It's uncomfortable because I have to bend my pinky down and back too much.

I end up rebinding mine to the following:

E: Forward
D: Back
S: Strafe L
F: Strafe R
G: Reload
H: Drop Weapon
T: Use Item
W: Lean L
R: Lean R
A: Crouch
Z: Lay down
Space: Jump
Shift: Run

The WASD keys limited amount of keys that I had accesible to the pinky, so this allowed for crouch, lay down, and run to be used by that finger. Works pretty well since Quake1😉

My setup must be extremely weird.

E - strafe left
R- Move Back
T - strafe right
F - Duck
Spacebar - jump
A - chat
Right Mouse - Move Forward
Left Mouse - Fire
G - Use
H - Reload
S - Team Chat
X - Chat
W - Lean Left
Y - Lean Right
Mouse Key 4 - Zoom
Mouse Key 5 - Walk

Plus several other keys designated.

It's like you've purposefully made it more difficult for yourself. Like you were so good at games that you had to cripple yourself in some manner so you decided to pick keys at random.

Yeah, that's just madness 😕

QSWE ftw

I used to use the arrow keys and had myself convinced that I liked it better than WASD. Then one day I switched because I was playing a game that needed more keys, and I haven't gone back to the arrow keys. WASD is so much more comfortable.

Same here.

You know thinking of giving ESDF a shot...

I still dont understand why WASD became the defacto standard. It makes no sense to me sense you cant use the left hand pinky for anything. Anyone who uses this is missing out in functionality. ESDF and even arrow keys give more flexability.

In WASD, left hand pinkie sits perfectly on shit key. When using ESDF, pinkie sort of lands on Z but has to be scrunched inwards somewhat. WASD is more comfortable, ESDF has more keys in a closer proximity. It's clearly a trade-off. I continue using WASD because back in the day I had to remap all my game controls for each new game to WASD, it's nice that these days the games I play come mapped with my style as the defacto standard. To go changing to ESDF puts me back to where I used to be, remapping every key. The worst part about remapping to ESDF is that you are going to have to map over several utility keys as well so it becomes more of an effort to figure out what you mapped over.

eh my left pinky can hit anything from the windows key all the way up to ~ with no issues useing WSAD

I use a Belkin n52te, better key positioning and customizable.

But, regarding WASD, I position my #3 or middle finger centered on S. Pinky then reaches Shift and CTRL, most other functions within easy reach by other fingers in that hand position.

Helps to have a mouse that has extra buttons; assign some of the functions that are hard to reach with the left hand to the right-hand mouse buttons.

WASD ftw, Always had to remap when they changed it, ESDF works great when you have the small girly fingers =D.

Mouse with extra buttons a must or you can teach the thumb to hit the 10keys ENT + and - for the extra.

I still think that is the dumbest place for the WIN key.

Anubis, You made me a beliver in the Pink Unicorns.

I keep rereading the OP and still wondering how this could be possibly serious. I mean really, I had to double check the post date to make sure it was not April 1. I don't mean to be harsh, but it doesn't take a whole lot of common sense to figure out how the fingers should be arranged on WASD. Whether to use WASD or ESDF is arbitrary, but not being able to figure out what fingers to use? C'mon, this has to be a put-on.

As a side note, r-click = jump FTW. You'll never miss another rocket jump in your life.

I use a Belkin N52 speedpad. I map the keys to whatever I want 😛
