I have kaspersky pro installed now, after first install it only caught 2out of 3...then I realized I never updated it virus definitions..

it now catches all 3 but lets me download the zip file

Failed to catch:
kernel32.dli
 
I have the Bitdefender Home edition, trial. I can set up scheduled scans, autoprotect, and manual scan (right click a file/folder). Works fine.

Missed 1:
kernel32.dll

It shouldn't affect anything, but I have norton setup just for manual scanning.
 
AVG 6.0 Free Edition with Virus database 372 Release date Feb. 13th 2004 caught all three upon scanning the .zip file.
 
Stay tuned... when I get some free time, I'm going to do a comparison between Bitdefender & Panda Titanium Antivirus 2004. I'm gathering more viruses/trojans for testing, and will provide screenshots of both apps as well.
 
Norton AV 2004 updated 2/11/04

Initially downloaded zip file. After fully downloading Norton's warned & removed the porn.bat & dc61.exe. Nothing about the kernel32.dli, even after unzipping & a manual scan.

Customized SmartScan to include '.dli' extension & nothing found. Tried changing extension to '.com' & still no threats found.


I tried emailing the zip to myself to see it MailDefense would catch anything, but i have a problem downloading large attachments over my dial-up account. I'll try it again.

Same here. I've never had any problem with PC-cillin and have had it since 1997.
 
I still don't understand.... some Norton users claims that it caught all three, while some others (with latest definition) missed 1 file??

oh, I remember that my office used to use THIS AV called Vexira. It was pretty good....
 



Norton Antivirus 2004 (with all updates) only caught 2 of 3 makes me wonder what else has managed to sneak past it.
 
I've updated the virii.zip file.. it contains a total of seven viruses/trojans now. ONCE AGAIN, ALL OF THEM ARE VERIFIED TO BE DANGEROUS FILES--DO NOT RUN THEM!! Panda actually missed one of them (Bitdefender still caught every single one), however, even the pretty reliable RAV antivirus online scanner missed the same one Panda missed. This is kind of bad..because normally if a virus is not picked up, but I THINK the file might be dangerous, I'll use the RAV online scanner to verify. No matter how much a better interface Panda has over Bitdefender, or how much more informative it is, you can't ignore the importance of an antivirus software's ability to recognize as many viruses as possible.
 
AVG 6.0 missed 2 backdoor, Virtool. I need a free AV thats reliable. What Free AV got all of them? It let me unzip 5 and then found 3 with a scan.
 
Hate to break it to ya, but no free AV got all of them. So far, it seems Bitdefender 7.2 and Panda Antivirus Titanium 2004 are the most effective...however, Panda did miss one out of the seven, but that still beats many other AV apps.
 
Just ran NAV 04 w/updated def's and it caught 4 upon download and 1 on second scan. Missed both of the Backdoor Server files. This is not good. Anyone gotten all 7?

Who is the champion so far of Free AV?
 
To be honest, I'm not sure which free AV is the best. Anyone care to comment on this? I don't even know which ones are free.. AVG and avast!, right?
