You wouldnt want a dedicated trojan detector lol, some of them just open ports up for anything to get in, and yeah went to that page on the AV performance and all, thats all great so your telling me the best AV listed there finds just 53% or whatever, of whats out there ? All of you who want to know what the 'best' av is, go google - antivirus sandbox - read through the results, learn about sandboxing, what it does, what it is, and how an av with it kicks ass over probably every av listed on that site at the top of this page. Once you know what sandboxing is, then find an av that uses a Full sandbox, not just a bit. i could tell you all the info but that would be no fun.

I went ahead and tried to look into the antivirus sandbox technology XplosiV talked about. It seems like a great idea, but so far from the 20 sites or so I have looked at, it gets mixed reviews. Detecting many virus', but not all. And it gives a lot of false positives, like if you download a program update, which deletes some older files and changes some registry settings, the sandbox will not allow this. It also seems as though you would need a standard antivirus to work along side this, since the sandbox will detect and stop viruses, but does nto tell you what the virus is. Is that the jist of it? ARe there any good products that use this technology? All I found was esafe desktop, which got mixed reviews, and norman virus control which didn't have many reviews, but thier own site does a nice job of telling you how good it is, but not sure how much that is worth.

NAV Corporate 8.1.1.323 was installed on a client's PC and was finding nothing, but they continually complained about wierd activity. I installed the latest NOD32 in 30-day trial and it immediately found 5 trojans in almost 50 infected files. After cleaning and rebooting, 2 reappeared in 7 files. Cleaned/reboot/cleaned/reboot. After five cycles, it appears clear and runs normally. This was WinXP Home. I'm pretty happy with NOD32 at the moment. NAV really disappointed me.

Is this worth buying? It is Panda Titanium and Sygate bundled together.I dont have a cd burner,or anything else to save anything, so I cant burn a copy of an antivirus for my new pc thats coming this month. I want something to install before I go on the net. Free or paying for it doesnt matter to me. Unless windows firewall will protect me long enough for me to download sygate and a good antivirus, which everyone says "dont count on it".

Common sense.

Cost - $0. Protection - Infinite. Peace of mind - Priceless. :)

(Yes, I haven't had an AV installed for years. Nor have I been infected with anything. Hmm.)

There's links all over the damn place.

Look for my posts and the posts of tazdevil, of 06/16/2004 and 06/18/2004, for starters.

You want the best, KAV 5.0 is it IMO... based on my testing, reading independent articles and the fact that they have decent, responsive support. Fully functional 30 day trial can be downloaded at www.kaspersky.com..

You buy a free AV, you get what you pay for and shouldn't bitch if you get infected.

Some info for y'all.

http://www.av-comparatives.org click on the comparative link on the left, view February/May results.

Rokop is well respected and you don't need to read German to be able to interpret the chart. Nice thing is that they indicate system impact for each app on the bottom of the chart.

If anyone is interested, someone passed on the following, pretty cool stuff. Light on resources with heuristics like NOD32 with detection rate and broader threat detection of KAV. 30 day trial, once you uninstall it, can't reinstall. http://www.mks.com.pl/english.html (mks_vir 2004). Should have a legit US website up next week, URL is mksantivirus.com or something similar.

I tried Kaspersky (a demo).. hated it. It was cool but it was a big resource hog. I ditched Panda because it had major bugs in it that were not resolved in the next release. I'm going back to Bitdefender, but I'm gonna buy the standard edition (instead of using the free one). At least Bitdefender responds to their support tickets. Panda support tickets would go weeks without response. Horrible customer service.

I don't know specifically why results vary, however, I've been very pleased with Kaspersky 5.0 on my WIN XP OS PC. It's not been a resource hog and works seemlessly for me. On my WIN98 OS PC I'm still using the freeware version of AVG 6.0 and it's been great as well.

Equally importantly, neither have conflicted with my Zone Alarm Pro 6.0 or SMC router firewalls or with my PestPatrol program.

My $.02 worth.
Cheers!

my one complaint with AVG is that it keeps detecing some trojan in System Volume Information folder. I've had this happen on multiple computers and my friends keep asking me wtf that message is and why they can't get rid of it.

OK, I'm gonna make this recommendation again: NOD32

Caught 3 little trojans that AVG free missed. You can get a 2 year subscription at 50% off the second year.

NOD32 is light and fast. KAV is much heavier, and defintiely much slower. If you like KAV, you'll love NOD32.

Panda support is the worst. Platinum 7 was just to resource heavy for me and the Titanium builds just kept getting more buggy with every release. I switched to Kaspersky 5 Personal and has been running great since May.

Anyone else using Bitdefender Standard and liking it? Not liking it? I dunno what happened with Kaspersky.. something was eating up 100% CPU for some reason, and it turned out to be Kaspersky. Out the window it went.

I'm thinking of doing a new head-to-head test between Bitdefender, Kaspersky, and NOD32. The test will not only include how many different viruses/trojans each one catches, but also e-mail scanning ability, and the speed of a disk scan.

You should throw F-Secure and F-Prot into the ring also.

That sounds like a good idea. I've been using Norton 2003 and don't have too many complaints, but it is a bit resource heavy and seems to take a long time to do a scan. Maybe you could do a scan time comparison with Norton thrown in, too, so those of us who have yet to upgrade will know how much advantage to expect. ;)
