You have to restart your computer to play securom titles after using tools from Microsoft's SysInternals.

This isn't an issue of not being able to play games without CDs, I don't do that. This is an open beta, so there is no CD at all.
I see what you're getting at though, it's good advice. Alcohol 52% is pretty sweet.
Task Manager will show you RAM and CPU usage for a game without triggering anti-hacking code.

I spent forever trying to get NWN2 to work and I had to uninstall half my software and hardware to do it. Then with the next patch, it didn't play no matter what I did. I wasted so much time on it, Atarti should have been paying me rather than the other way around.

Better learn to use Linux then, and give up gaming. DRM isn't going away, unfortunately. I'd say that not being their products is a good thing, and it is, but it won't make much difference at all. There are far too many people out there who simply don't care and will install the latest piece of DRM laden software regardless.
Maybe I'm lucky, but I've never liked any SecuRom 'equiped' game enough to buy it. Probably contemplated buying NWN 2 for a while, however, I never went through with it. Hope they phase the crap out quicker.

You may have played a game demo (yes, securom titles' demos are infected as well and SecuROM remains even after you uninstall the demo) or a standalone game that uses secuROM without knowing (since it so stealthily installs itself).
A quick check to see if it is on your system would be to look for SecuROM entries with RootKit Revealer
Note that FEAR uses Securom. That's how I got it. It takes some work to get rid of it too, much more than Starforce. I had to use a third party program called Unlocker to remove all its files, and some registry entries are still there since Regedit can't read them correctly.
I guess they don't want you to see their UAService7.exe in the background. This is exactly what viruses and malware try to do. :roll:

Wow, it flags process explorer?! This is a completely legit tool from MICROSOFT DEVS (I believe they acquired sysinternals awhile back). That is ridiculous.

Sysinternals is indeed part of Microsoft and SecuROM does have Microsoft's Process Explorer blacklisted.
That's exactly what I was going to post next. It's crazy that we have to deal with this to play games we've obtained legally.
On another note, I'm a huge fan of FEAR, too... I guess it's possible to play it without SecuROM, though, with some tweaking. At least, that's what I've been told by friends.
I'm very happy with a couple companies that have actually released patches that remove their DRM protection, due to consumer pressure. It's a good move, and more companies should take to it. That's a good way to win back the "idealist" gamer.
If you're willing to use cracks, you can deal with the singleplayer games easily. I don't play any Securom 7 games online, so this works well for me.
Some companies just remove it for buyer convenience after the game has been out for some time. Epic has been doing that for years (even though they don't use anything really bad in the first place) and I think id has too.

I like Securom. It causes so many problems for the legit buyers that it turns most of them to hacks to get the game running, so a new generation of pirates is born with every title.

Here is Sony's response regarding SecuROM's blacklisting of Microsoft's Process Explorer (from the SBlade @ the NWN2 forums):
They didn't put up a very good excuse. The crackers are the only ones who would bother with that and they already broke Securom 7 long ago, and in any case I'm sure there are other programs that do the same thing and are not blacklisted.

SecuROM installs itself with many games (such as fear, NWN2, C&C 3, Jade Empire: Special Edition, etc.) in addition to installing with the demos of certain games. For example, FEAR's freeware demo installs SecuROM on your system.
