Yep, there are alot of stupid people, some in this thread. The concept you are so desperate to be "specific" with is affect heuristic rather than the incorrectly applied survivorship bias.

"You people"..... elitist much?

Winston Churchill — 'Never let a good crisis go to waste'

People not caring about real day-to-day dangers such as traffic accidents is a case study example of survivorship bias, and that bias makes use of the affect heuristic a matter of course. The Ebola panic as a whole is also a clear example of affect heuristic. I, too, can Wikipedia; and of course I'm an elitist, just like you. How do you think our dicks are measuring up so far? They're pretty even, I think.

Then the seagulls eat the infected dead fish. Game over

Its like this. Ebola can't be spread in water, BUT, the first few fish eat the ebola vomit, and then those fish die, then other fish eat those dead fish, and that's how additional fish are infected. Fish die, more fish eat them, and it spreads to sharks, whales, birds feeding off the fish etc.
Pretty soon you are having a picnic at the beach, and some ebola bird shits on your sandwich, and voila, you've got theBola.

And if she wasn't showing any symptoms, she wasn't infectious.

which nurse are we discussing here LOL.
I'm talking about the nurse with a fever who called the CDC and the braindead protocol-follower at CDC said 99.6 is below our arbitarary ebola guideline of 100.4 so we're 100% certain you dont have ebola... so fly fly fly away.

this lady was contagious according to CDC statements that symptomatic people are contagious. now which lady are you talking about?

I wonder how seriously the CDC is taking this crisis. There have been people who have gotten this disease and beaten it. Americans, even. That means they are now immune from ebola. Why aren't they harvesting their serum for future patients? If ZMapp is out of commission for several more months, this is the next best thing. Come on, Federal government. Stop failing the American people.

And now for the lighter side of Ebola News. The side that makes you go D: (Well at least another side that makes you go D:)

6 Fake Ebola Cures! Courtesy of Alt-Med!
http://factually.gizmodo.com/6-fake-ebola-cures-being-promoted-online-1642118276/+megneal

I like number 6
6) Homemade Ebola Vaccine

Recently Natural News published a story titled "Treating Ebola with Homeopathy" (now taken down) that included instructions for a DIY Ebola vaccine. All you need is some spit or blood from a person infected with Ebola!
Ken Oftedal, the author of the awful blog post wrote, "I hope you will not need to apply the information presented in this article, but if you do, it could save your life and that of a loved one."
What you need:
1. A face mask and gloves
2. Two bottles (50 ml up to 500 ml glass or plastic bottles) with caps
3. Clean water (mineral or tap water)
4. An Ebola sample: some spit or other disease product, such as blood, from a person infected with Ebola, or who is suspected sick with it.
Any small quantity will do, even a pinhead.
5. An alcoholic liquid, such as whisky, brandy, rum, etc.
6. Half an hour of your time.
That's right. This guy is giving out instructions on how to make your very own "homeopathic" Ebola vaccine using an Ebola sample. He instructed readers to place the sample in a water bottle and dilute it over and over again—the founding theory behind the bullshit that is homeopathy. And then Oftedal told people to drink from the bottle.
It would be hilarious if it weren't so horrifying. This was actually published and some people might have thought it was a smart course of action to play vaccine developer in their basements. It's not.
And if you somehow still don't think there's anything wrong with people selling nebulous homeopathic cures online, take a look at just one example from Sierra Leone. At least 365 deaths have been traced back to a single herbalist who was selling bullshit Ebola cures.

This parasite is even more scary:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxoplasmosis

Makes mice fearlessly seek-out cats so the cat eats the infected mouse and the parasite's life cycle can complete.

Some people say humans also get it from cats.

"Some people"? 30-65% of the global population has it.

And yes, it does affect human behavior. Women get sluttier, interestingly enough.

Luckily, many homeopathic "cures" are so diluted that not a single particle of the original "active ingredient" remains in the final solution.

Which might make it safe.

But for all the wrong reasons, of course.

As opposed to all the clowns working everywhere else and touching every facet of your life, right?

4733.jpg

Stupid people are everywhere and if you don't think so, well, I've got some bad news for you. And let's not forget the immortal words of senator Mark Pryor, "You don't need to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate."

You people should be more worried about a dumbass blowing through a stopsign straight into your driver's-side door than you are about idiots in healthcare infecting you with Ebola; it's a hell of a lot more likely to happen. The only reason you don't is cognitive bias (survivorship bias, if you want to be specific). Do the rest of us a favor and just chill out, politicizing problems never helps resolve them.

Chill out dude. I just said I'm not worried about getting infected with Ebola, and I'm agreeing with you that people are clowns. Idk what your deal is you sound like you're mad about something.

Assuming they diluted it down to basically no virus particles and didn't infect themselves collecting Ebola fluids. So dumb.

Congress is making noise, so safe to assume that the concern is institution wide at the moment.

There have been people who have gotten this disease and beaten it. Americans, even.
True.

That means they are now immune from ebola.
No, not necessarily.

Why aren't they harvesting their serum for future patients?
.....

Is this a serious question?

If ZMapp is out of commission for several more months, this is the next best thing. Come on, Federal government. Stop failing the American people.

Maybe funding for things like this should occur before a crisis rather than after.

Like I guessed earlier, some people on youtube turning this into a racial issue. Some of the comments are funny. She's got 2 million hits.

This is fucked up, when a black man gets ebola, they give him a 2nd rate treatment and he dies, but when an asian woman gets ebola, she gets a 1st rate treatment and she lives

ForzaJuve15 hours ago

The Dallas hospital is racist they probably did not treat Duncan like this because he is african. They did not send him to a real hospital

Only God can cure her and many those infected with Ebola.

Why aren't they doing...exactly what they ARE doing?!

They did some blood plasma transfusions when they could to give antibodies to newer victims. They didn't have plasma from a compatible blood type in some cases. Simple as that.

Correlation != Causation. We know it can be found in people and it seems to correlate with higher accidents rates, sluttiness, and other risky behavior, but there is no proof that it causes them. It could just as easily be that people who take more risks are behaving in some way that makes them more likely to let their cars out, own cats, or do something specific to contract it from cats. In other words, the relationship could be the exact OPPOSITE Where those behaviors cause you to contract toxoplasmosis instead of the other way around. Because it demonstrably makes mice do something risky/illogical it's easy to jump to the conclusion that it is having a similar effect on us, but that's still a jump.

I believe there is strong evidence that at least on Duncan first visit, the hospital decided he was an African visiting from a poor 3rd world country, so he deserved 3rd world care. They gave him substandard care because he wasn't an american, wasn't white, was 3rd world.
