why is it that a lot of pretty girls smoke? i'm trying to figure that out in class, since class is usually boring as hell. i came up with: nicotine speeds your metabolism up (no idea if this is true), so you burn more calories. so smoking makes you thin. and thin is attractive to me (not sick thin, thats just gross... eww!). combine that with some blond hair dye and some color contacts, bam! instant blue eyed blond.

ElFenix,

I'd prefer a somewhat chunky non-smoker over a thin smoker any day of the week. They do it mostly because they see it done on TV and in movies and feel it's "right"/"kewl"/"in"/"hip"/"the rage" all the while having no idea the demon they're unleashing. Peer pressure, too. Smoking among teen females is rising!

ElFenix, you are somewhat correct, smoking does indeed increase your metabolism. Although, in your example I believe there are other factors that lead to the "stick" women that you describe. The same women that smoke to fit into the "in" group are also the same ones that have mental weakness to believe that they have to be a walking skeleton in order to be attractive as well.

Back to the metabolism comment - I once had my Dad jump up and cheer for me during an argument with my mother. My mom has smoked for 20+ years and has tried quitting several times, here's sort of how the argument went:

Mom: If I quit smoking I'll get fat
Me: Why do you say that?
Mom: because smoking raises your metabolism
Me: and so does exercise
Dad: Wahooo! Nice one kid!

[end of argument] :D

Let's remember that smoking is addictive and hard to quit. There is a reason why it takes so long to beat the habit and why there is a large recidivism rate. We shouldn't be so quick to judge why a person smokes and just worry about whether they might be trying to quit! ;)

Spoooon, starting, and continuing are two very different things.

Spoooon,

Yes I meant that's largely why they start...and it does also contribute to that nasty continuance, too.

Well, cigs are one of the few things that have nothing to offer initially beyond looking cool. I doubt that anyone who smokes took a drag on their first cigarette and found it relaxing or calming. I bet they coughed their lungs out! But, if they stick with it, they probably started to enjoy the various side effects of nicotine. I'm just saying that cigs have other things to offer than looking cool.

Besides, people do a lot of things because they think it's cool. You buy a certain brand of shoe or wear certain kinds of clothing because it's cool. Almost everything a person does is effected by peer pressure: from the inane to the insane. Cigarettes are one of those things. I don't support cigarettes, and I don't smoke them, but I don't think people should rag on those that do choose to smoke. Every smoker knows the damage they are doing to themselves: being high and mighty and reminding them is only going to get their back up. So, let's just leave the smokers alone. They'll die out soon enough... ;)
