Found this deal while browsing FW.

Seagate Ultra ATA/100 300GB hard drive with 16MB cache

$139.99-$50 rebate = $89.99 + shipping

I think it's available in store at Fry's (no shipping, but will probably have tax)

I can't wait 'til we completely do away with the PATA interface...like the floppy..it must DIE DIE DIE! ;)

I do like Seagate's though..... :)

PATA is great for storage, I don't even mind ATA/100 when you're getting a nice deal like this. Too bad I don't have any extra IDE slots (and don't feel like getting a card) :p

do they carry the 8MB version?

The $50 rebate works on that too, and they're usually $20-30 cheaper...meaning we might be able to get the 8MB PATA for $60 or so....

I tried looking for it before, but didn't see the 8mb version for sale there.

I saw this earlier today, I was about to post about it myself. While I wouldn't get a PATA as an internal drive, I've been looking for a good deal on a PATA to go into an enclosure for backups. This is perfect. Even with shipping and tax (I live in WA) I'd be able to have a big hard drive plus a nice enclosure (say, $60) for a grand total under $180. I know this isn't as huge of a price difference compared to retail external drives as it used to be, but it's still not bad. Besides, it gives me more flexibility in choosing a better looking enclosure!

$8.74 ground shipping seems kind of expensive considering there's a Fry's is just 2 hours away from where I live... I'm going to sleep on it for a few days and maybe get it on Monday if I still want the drive. I could use a big drive like this for backups, and Seagate is the best

what is wrong with pata/ata100 period? sata may be theoretcially faster but in reality it is not as the drives don't even burst over 100MB/s....with the exception of possibly the raptor.

PATA FTW! When you're just throwing in drives into a home fileserver, how do you justify the extra expense for SATA controllers, drives and cables?

I run 10 PATA drives in a case with rounded IDE cables. Snug fit but has been purring along for the last 1-2 years :) (Moria)

It gets clogged if you're striping. They're great drives though if you just want storage, like I said.

I ordered the internal drive from Outpost on Friday so I'll let you know when they confirm and ship my order. I only say this in light of the difficulties with the external 300 GB drive.

Could someone inform me of these difficulties?

I am getting ready to buy an external drive and am debating between buying an internal drive and an enclosure or just purchasing an external drive. I was about to go with the 300gb seagate external drive (Link) until i heard about these "difficulties."

Thx

Sorry, I should've been more specific. I was referring to the difficulties associated with the external drive and how there used to be two rebates and now there is only one. Check this thread for the latest on that (you've probably already been there).

imo i would do a internal drive and buy an enclosure because the external drives usually have a shorter warranty..just my .02 ;)

Yeah, that was one of the reasons I chose to go the internal route. Besides, I noticed that Rosewill has some sleek enclosures (most I've seen are butt-ugly) and has that chipset (Oxford 911) that I've heard good things about. I'm still researching enclosures, though.

Seriously? You'd rather spend 4 hours driving to save $8 shipping fee? You'd probably eat that up in gas alone!
