This really is fairly disappointing and limits what Nintendo can do with their VC games, demos, and add-on content. Right now it may not seem like an issue because there isn't much to be had. But what if they start releasing demos? What if they want to start adding original games to the VC like the Live Arcade and PS Store? They will definitely be larger than NES ROMS. Then what about software like the web browser? If you go to the store you will see message to check back for future software downloads. What about additional content for retail games?
I don't know if Nintendo has plans for all of that stuff, but if they do it will eventually add-up. Think about how much people complain about the 20 GB on the 360. The Wii is only working with 512 MB. Granted, you won't be using the Wii for HD movie downloads or anything, but with so little space it won't take long for the stuff I mentioned to chew that up as soon as a decent amount of content is available.
Until now I had just assumed that the SD cards could be used exactly like the 512 MB of internal flash memory. It's disappointing to find out that it can't be used that way. But knowing Nintendo they have already thought of all of this and have a plan in place. So until I start to run out of space I'm not going to spend too much time worrying about it.
