This really is fairly disappointing and limits what Nintendo can do with their VC games, demos, and add-on content. Right now it may not seem like an issue because there isn't much to be had. But what if they start releasing demos? What if they want to start adding original games to the VC like the Live Arcade and PS Store? They will definitely be larger than NES ROMS. Then what about software like the web browser? If you go to the store you will see message to check back for future software downloads. What about additional content for retail games?

I don't know if Nintendo has plans for all of that stuff, but if they do it will eventually add-up. Think about how much people complain about the 20 GB on the 360. The Wii is only working with 512 MB. Granted, you won't be using the Wii for HD movie downloads or anything, but with so little space it won't take long for the stuff I mentioned to chew that up as soon as a decent amount of content is available.

Until now I had just assumed that the SD cards could be used exactly like the 512 MB of internal flash memory. It's disappointing to find out that it can't be used that way. But knowing Nintendo they have already thought of all of this and have a plan in place. So until I start to run out of space I'm not going to spend too much time worrying about it.

not directly from the game. you have to save your game to the system memory, then exit the game, go to your wii memory management settings, and then copy from the memory to the card. if you want to load that save game, you have to go back and move it from the sd card to the main memory then load the game.

I just sent an email to Nintendo about this. I suggest any one else that has an issue with this do so also. Hopefully they can do something about it.

It's not something i'm going to sell my wii over, but it is an annoyance.

I would be might pissed if I was you. Upset enough to sell it......to me :D

my guess is like the gamecube, there will be fewer and fewer exclusives for it and it will fade away. I like my gamecube but the game selection is pathetic.

that'll only happen if the installed base isn't there. if nintendo gets a big enough installed base, the 3rd party support will be there.

Maybe they catch less flak because of the " sub par " price. I thought SD was a cool idea. The games arent huge like the ones for 360 and ps3. I mean its not like they needed to put a beta max, i mean blu ray in the thing.

We have one kid down the block that has a ps3, 2 more of my sons friends got 360s. Why the hell are they at my house every freakin day playing the damn Wii?

Because that is the number one use for the wii, to get 3 of your friends to come over and all act goofy and have fun. Its been like that since super nintendo. 4 man bomberman woot.

Nintendo just wanted external storage (like their memory cards on the Game Cube). They thought using standard SD ram would be cheaper than designing a new memory interface. I thought it was an elegant and simple solution myself.

This is all people are wanting. You admit it's a good design. Folks are wondering why it didn't happen.

Maybe I misunderstood the problem- you're saying that if I save a character on my Wii, I can't go to a friend's house and use it on their system?

BTW- I thought Nintendo was going to have a Mii database, so this wouldn't be needed- Mii records would be downloaded from the Internet or something.

not exactly. its just not as straight forward as it has been in the past.

You will have to transfer the saved game to the internal memory in order to play it. you can't play it directly from the SD card.

Your MII personalities can be saved to your controller or sent via net to a friend. You can load savegames directly from the SD you have to go through a lengthy copy to the system memory and then load it.

I've suspected that since the first few game's I've bought have not been able to save to the SD card. Kind of frustrating and annoying, especially if games don't allow for multiple (or even better, unlimited) saves. Considering how small saved games are, it's going to take a either a bunch of large N64 games or a LOT of money to fill up the 512 MB of internal memory, but this kind of rules out the possibility of any kind of significant downloadable content. Nintendo really blew it with online features this time, I think. I don't care much about the forecast channel or the news channel or even the web browser channel (unless I can hook up a keyboard).

Oh well, like Microsoft said, Wii + 360 is really the best way to go this time around. If you want to stick with only one system then it depends on what's important to you.

Edit: I'd be happy if they just added the ability to create virtual Gamecube memory cards on the internal system memory. Really stupid to require people to buy Gamecube memory cards.

So its sub-par but it acheives it's number one goal? Help me, I can't tell if you like, or don't like the wii.

He bought one but sold it shortly thereafter because the only fishing game got bad reviews. He may buy another in the future. He's a PS3 fanboy, but he's not completely biased against the Wii if he was telling the truth about buying one and playing it.

umm... you can't load save games directly because you just went through that whole copy to system memory!! that's the whole point everyone is making :p

as for external usb/flash.. that would kick ass. and then a custom video player channel.. woot! actually, I just want someone to make a custom video player channel that will browse standard network shares and stream :)

That's certainly one hell of a convoluted way of admitting that the Wii is a better system despite its well know graphical shortcomings.

Um no, I haven't admitted that. He asked why they are going over to his house and playing the Wii together. The answer is because thats what its for. Its not like the other consoles, which most likely, would be 2 people, or more likely, just one person playing online with others over the internet. so you see, the situation does not actually give any indication of which console is "better". In short, the Wii requires many people to physically be near it to play multiplayer, while the others don't.

So you're saying it's more fun?

and that's because the consoles are different. they serve similar, yet different audiences.

Yeah... Rapalla something or another. It's a port from last gen consoles. Kind of sucks that it's bad, because that's exactly the type of game that could be good on the Wii.

The wii caters to people who have friends? I dotn fully believe thats the only reason. I havent been able to watch TV since christmas. Even when the kids are alone they still chose the wii over the xbox. The wii is fun as hell whereas the MS and sony consoles are just..... more consoles.

Seems like a great feature to me, as opposed to having to buy expensive propietery cards.

It's designed to function as storage, and it does that just fine. Every legitimate use, like taking a saved game to a friend, is possible.

Allowing applications to run from this would open up a ton of piracy issues. Some people would like to see that, but anyone who isn't interested in that should be glad that game publishers will not be ripped off.
