most people get voip to save on long distance bills. believe it or not some people can spend hundreds a month on long distance.
as far as outage. in the last 5 years my phone service has been out longer than my DSL has.

sorry let me rephrase. in five years of service before DSL my phone got disconnected for 3 days due to fallen lines.
in the five years since i have never had a DSL outage, due to a problem with my provider.
just saying that DSL is just as reliable as the telephone line it is run on.
though i suppose the VoIP provider could have problems but your DSL would still work...so.. i guess not.

Ah. Still, with a fairly large sample size and a decent sampling rate (it is possible that it went down briefly at night but you missed it b/c you weren't awake, etc) you still have 100% uptime.

Vonage has an automatic forwarding setup, if I lose power or my ISP is down or something my calls get forwarded to my Sprint cell without me having to do anything. Without power my cell still works, and my voicemail picks up the slack if it's dead or not on. No matter what they can leave a message without a problem.
I also have my cable modem/router/Vonage box hooked up to a UPS, which I've tested and they run a solid 2 hours on without a problem. That's plenty long to call the power company about issues, and I've rarely had a power outtage more than a few hours at most. If I have to call 911, I can do so from home or cell, and I'm STILL paying less for both that I was for Verizon's Freedom Package which gave me unlimited local/LD. They wanted like $70/month for it, I'm barely paying $60 for Vonage and my cell, hell not even $50.

Only the fact I told them id pay the fee to turn the filter off and they have not done so yet. Better do it soon. My Landline gets shut off friday.
Speednet backed off the monthly charge for some reason. But they said its againt the Acceptable use policy to Stream audio... Damn I guess you cant do anything but check yer e-mail and shop ebay nowadys for the $42 a month I give em. LOL

He already did. He contacted the FCC and Vonage, who must have in turn contacted his ISP to let them know.
