Hello.

As im slowly deciding on components for a new system, needed some clarification on the specifications of SATA and SCSI.

Are SCSI 160 hard drives similar to SATA drives? One has a maximum transfer rate of 1.60gbps and the other 1.50gbps? And similarly with ultraSCSI320 and SATA II are they 3.20gbps and 3.00gbps?

From what ive read previously, high end systems have trouble breaking the 50-60mbps barrier. So a SCSI controller at 160=1.60gbps is faster than anything needed (a u160 controller) in a home system?:beer:
 
You have the estimated max BUS speeds correct, but that doesn't mean the Hard disks can utilize those fully. the fastest SATA drives out now get close to the 150 speeds during burst transfers, but not sustained read/writes. Same for the SCSI's, which are pricier.

What I meant is that even high end systems have trouble proccessing from a Hard Disk (sata or scsi) more than 50-60mbps. So limited by your online service provider and other hardware that even with say a C2Duo say E6600 that it can only downlload or upload at a small percentage of the total 150-160 or 300-320 speeds that the hard disks are capable of.

Correct me if im wrong, but I read this a year or so ago that SATA I barriers have hardly been touched, even though you said that they can reach a full 1.5 gbps now. So most SATA II or ultraSCSI is futureproofing, but still a ways off before their full capabilities are realized. Please correct me if im wrong, because the disks I have are ultra 320 and my computer knowledge is average at best.
 
So you mean the 50-60MBps avg sustained read/write speeds. Those are just that, average sustained read/write...sending or receiving huge files. You are correct when it comes to that measurement of speed for hard disk drives, but when you look at burst speeds for new hard disk drives, they can meet or exceed the SATAI speeds.

Take your U320 drives for instance. These drives have the capability of sending 320MBps. Will you ever max that SCSI bus out with one or two drives attached to the chain? No, but you start adding more and more devices to the U320 bus...and you might just.
 
i have an old 2.4 GHz Xeon with an Adaptec 160 controller and a 10K SCSI drive, 36 GB.

i was surprised how much faster 2 parallel ATA 160GB drives in its replacement machine,
a Shuttle SFF with a 3.06 P4, were.

then SATA drives (e.g. 320 GB Seagate) are faster still.

just doing informal testing with 5-100 GB file transfers, moving files from the machine
being replaced to the new machine.

again i'm comparing to a 2003 vintage Ultra-160 SCSI.
 
Hello again.

Finally beginning to put togethor a system based on SCSI Hard Drives. Have an LSI ribbon and an LSI U320 21320-IS. Bought the controller refurbished. It has a very limited warranty.
As a PC builder, is there much of a difference between the 21320-IS and a 21320-R?
