Zinfamous, Syndicate is definitely one of the best PC games of all time! The expansion pack was pretty damn good too. Ahhh fond memories of the gauss guns.

Under the same thought process...
I'm going to make a motion to not consider Modern Warfare 1/2 and Black Ops on this list...
All the good games seem to be taken. If mods were allowed I would have suggested Infiltration for UT99, but UT is mentioned so I'm happy enough.
I nominate the Sims (Original), Rainbow 6: Rogue Spear, Max Payne (this will probably be met with some criticism), No One Lives Forever....I'll let someone else write up the greatness of them if they'd like, too late for me here.
Edit: Oh, and DarkStone. Anyone remember that?

Wow a lot of RPG love in here. Maybe you should have a separate RPG top 100. No offense guys, but RPG's aren't for everyone.
FPS-RTS for me, therefore I would recommend:
-Farcry
- FEAR(the first one)
- MOHAA(even if it was a ripoff of Saving Ryan's privates
)
- Stalker SOC(some RPG elements as well but still a very good FPS),
- AOE II(including the expansion)
- AOM(including The Titans)
- Starcraft
- Warcraft II
You guys pick the order, but IMO all these games should be on the list.

Quake.
It's multiplayer component (tcp/ip) put competitive FPS in the spotlight. I remember waiting to play Qtest and when it came out played the heck out of it (anyone remember the dragon in dm4?). Then the shareware came out and I played it on TEN (anyone remember that too?). Used Qspy to search for public servers instead of typing connect xxx.xxx.xxx.xx in the console. Then quakeworld came out and there were two variations of Quake multiplayer (net quake and quakeworld). I loved quakeworld as I was on a 28.8 modem at the time. I remember messing around with MaxMTU, registry settings, console commands (push latency -250) etc just to shave off extra milliseconds off my ping. Hating on LPBs (low ping bastards), the 'omg wtf lag.. owned' moments, my first death32c experience, the demos, the clans, idling on irc... good times.
Still play quake to this day (mostly with the ezquake bots). LONG LIVE QUAKE!

so disappointed that this was never updated. Though if it were, I fear that it would be a squad-based FPS, mostly garbage.
There were Syndicate wars, which was not very good. But syndicate was massive.

A source engine gem. One of the few games that completely engrossed me, frightened me. It might have been a point in me life, but this game is consuming. A sound effect and soundtrack to die for. Sharp well developed characters. Play your cards right and land a schwank apartment with your very own sexed up goul. Climb through vents to pick locks, hack computers, putting those RPG skills to use to solve quests your own way (ala Deus Ex). Factions. Different endings. Incredibly mature themes. Rating: A(Adult) Some downright disturbing locales. If Shadowrun was made today with an adult rating and injected with everything supernatural, it *might* look something like this.

Oh, agree there. If I were making my own personal top 100, I'd have both Civ 1 and 4 on there, as well as Alpha Centauri. Just saying that, if I had to pick just one, I'd choose the original.
Nice on remembering Lords of the Realm 2, Kabob.
Also agree with everyone praising Syndicate.

Everquest - I have to say that any list that includes MMO's has to have this game. Why? If you include a game like WoW, you have to include EQ since WoW's mechanics are largely based on EQ. WoW did a lot of things right. It corrected a lot of EQ's flaws. However, EQ was the first game to really create a realistic and persistent 3D game world that people played on. During the era it was released in, EQ was amazingly realistic. It had a great environment that was varied depending on where you were.
Special mention to MUD's in general. These text based games proved that an online role playing community was viable and IMHO was the precursor to games like Ultima Online and Everquest.
Marathon 2 - The Marathon series can be said to be the spiritual predecessor to the Halo series. Up until recently the original Marathon was a Macintosh only game and so was the third installment which was Marathon Infinity. However, Marathon 2 was released on the PC and it is largely the same as Marathon Infinity. Marathon 2 did poorly on the PC which is a reason why Marathon Infinity is Mac only.
So why does it deserve inclusion? Mainly for the multi-player modes. It also made great use of secondary triggers where a lot of weapons had secondary triggers that fired the weapon differently. Some powerups like the night vision goggles can also play a significant role in success. Certain maps had light switches that turned off the lights and the lights in the area can be broken to dim things further. Obviously your vision is improved significantly with night vision goggles vs someone without them.
While Quake was undeniably popular and many a gamer cut his FPS skills on it, Marathon 2 had the best multi-player modes. There was the standard deathmatch.
Kill the Man With the Ball would be recognizable by Halo players. Essentially someone finds the "ball" which was a skull. They can only melee with the skull but not fire but everyone else can fire their weapons. Your task is to hold onto the ball as long as possible to win.
King of the Hill which was a blast to play on. There would be a "hill" which was not necessarily the center of the map or the highest point. Your objective is to stay on the hill as long as possible while everyone else wants to knock you off of it. It was great fun because you could split up into teams and have fights to defend your hill. Essentially a defend type game but the maps were what made it fun.
Tag which essentially everyone pits the last dead person tagged as "it" while everyone else avoids being tagged. This leads to mayhem as everyone gangs up on the tagged person.
There were a couple of other multi-player modes with no real significance.

Portal - In many ways, it is one of the most original game concepts out there. (Maybe not the greatest of all time, be definitely on the top 100 or top 1000 list
Half Life - Goes without saying. Smooth loading, lots of game time, and really fun multiplayer.
Starcraft - Come on, this one is just fun.
Black and White - Still a woot to play. I love this game. I only wish it was more popular and that its expansions/older brother didn't suck so much.
Jedi Knight: Dark forces II. Such a fun game. I think I have every nook and cranny of the levels memorized.
Rise of Nations: Probably one of the funnest AoE style RPGs out there.
This game was light years ahead of the rest of the genre when it was released. Amazing game.

I really don't get why this genre died. Freespace 2 was a BLAST to play!
Freespace 2 is my number 1 game of all time. I really need to check out the updated graphics and other mods. Haven't touched it in years.

I had bout a Matrox Millenia video card for 300.00 dollars and was devastated to read up the FAQ on why I could only get about 7fps at resolotuions less than 640x480 !
On Vacation, I had more fun leaving the beach and getting a Voodoo 1 ! There was so much around Quake, all the web sites with information. Gleaning information was as fun as playing the game.
Back then there were Intel, Cyrix and AMD cpu's. Intel played the games the best because of integer performance.

Another favorite I have not seen mentioned , was Descent II. I had a unique controller back then called the Spaceorb 360 . I loved that thing. It allowed all sorts of unique movement by twisting a ball.
Also, I was into cars, Nascar, Drag racing. So I bought most of Papyrus Nascar games. EA released at least 1 good Nascar game also around 1999.

Would you kindly include this strangely-unpopular game. Incredible sounds, unreal sights and of course, the plasmids. Fort Frolic was a dark masterpiece of a level, one of the best Ive ever played.
