Serious Sam: The First Edition.

Huge outdoor environments, largest boss monsters ever and coolest weapons for it's time. Plus, when games were still $40, it came out at $19.99.

Oh, and if I recall, bug-free.

I can't name just one game, so here are a few:

X-Wing/Tie Fighter series (especially Tie Figher and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter)
BF 1942
AoE I/II
UT 98

This is the problem with these lists too. It'd be better to have genre catagories..but even then, not all games fit one catagory. DAMN YOU SOFTWARE MAKERS!

My other votes: Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1

Master of Orion/Master of Orion 2

The original "4x" game that gave birth to the grand strategy genre we know today.

Countless hours upon hours lost to trying to just take over planets with my massive ground invasion forces of the Bulrathi, or stealing all the latest techs as the Darloks.

I couldn't believe neither of these made it to the top 100 on their list. Awesome 4x game, loved the tech, loved creating ships, and loved the tactical battles.

My vote goes to MoO as well.

Since the OP did another one I am too :p

Thief The Dark Project

Father of the stealth genre pretty much and awesome to boot, nothing more needs to be said about Thief cause any self respecting gamer already knows about it, and if they don't Garret will kill you :D

1. Ultima 7 Parts 1 & 2

By far the most immersive "real world", real time RPG of its era. No other game had fully scripted behaviors for each NPC in the entire world, and they would react to changes in their environment as well. It defined real time RPGs, and pretty much paved the way for current MMORPGs as well.

2. Star Control 2

Where else can you get a very simple game with enthralling 2D shooter aspects, cool alien races, and THOUSANDS of star systems to explore all while upgrading your ship and having your captain enhance alien relations with the all female Syreen race?

3. Wing Commander (1 and 2)

Chris Roberts was a pioneer in the field. Not only did he produce a quality title and put Origin on the map with a space combat sim of epic proportion, but he also invented the "cinematic game". Wing Commander was probably one of the first successful commercial titles that used cut scenes the way it did and told a story that was top notch, worthy of just about any SciFi geek's movie library.

3. Civilization

Not much to be said other than Civ brought the board game to life on the computer.

4. F-19/F-117/F-18/Apache (Microprose)

Welcome to the grand daddies of combat flight sim. Microprose defined the genre.

5. Silent Service II

Wow. Just wow. Being a fan of war history, particularly WWII and the Pacific theater, Silent Service II was just plain awesome. The slow pace of trying to creep your way into a Japanese battle group without getting detected while understanding their normal evasive patterns so you can get a couple torpedo shots off at a carrier and hopefully cripple it before getting your ass handed to you made it intense. Then, on a macro scale you got to watch the war unfold before your eyes as you took down merchant ships and small Japanese naval ships along the way.

6. Planetside

MMOFPS. The one, the only (literally only, because there is no other true) MMOFPS out there.

7. Mass Effect 2

Out of all the games I've played, I keep coming back to this one. It's beautiful, the story is great and it plays like a cinematic masterpiece. I hate sitting in front of a TV watching a mind numbing show because I'm not doing anything. Playing ME2 is like being IN a movie.

8. SimCity 2000

This, in my opinion, is the first real city builder out there. Not only that, but it was an evil genius's toybox of destruction. Seriously... the only real reason to build your city was so you could unleash disaster after disaster upon it.

9. Unreal Tournament (pick one)

Quake deathmatches were fun, for a time. But Unreal Tournament just made FPS's fun. Green plasma beams of face melting death, thank you. And dm_morpheus was ever so much fun with the shock rifle. Sure you didn't get the kill... but you could rest satisfied that the dude you just shot won't be landing on anything except a respawn.

10. Mechwarrior 2

Rounding out my top ten, I'm gonna have to saw MW2. It was a FPS, plain and simple. A very SLOW FPS. With lots of guns. And robots. BIG fucking robots.

good list SunnyD. I would have said Star Control 2 as my second nomination after Civ.

X-Com: UFO Defense.

May not look impressive if you weren't around then. But it had great music and the missions were genuinely tense.

Unreal

The AI was pretty darn good at the time. Same for the graphics. Had plenty of epic, intense moments...like in the mine when the lights shut off and the Skaarj comes rushing toward you.

Command & Conquer (the original... Gold Edition, to be precise)

The "original" was the C&C DOS version, and was released before windows 95.

The Gold edition was not released until after windows 95 was released.

Details aside, I liked the Gold edition better then the DOS version, and the Gold edition is probably the best C&C game ever made.

Nobody's mentioned Half Life yet?

Reinvigorated the stale FPS genre by including scripted (in-game) scenes, horror (I still remember the first time I saw a screaming guy getting sucked into a vent, and then gore getting spit back out), awesome boss monster (I can still hear the sound of that giant plant thing banging against the sides of the launch tube), etc. Nevermind the 3rd party add-ons.

I totally agree with the previously mentioned:
Doom
MoO2
HoMM 2/3
XCOM
Tie Fighter
Wing Commander 2 (this was the first PC game I ever played with voices!)

The problem I have with the list is a lot of people are zeroing in on the franchise first of a game series. Now I love Civilization, but honestly for me right now the most playable and enjoyable would be Civilization IV.

Simcity 2000 was awesome, but so was Simcity 4 :)

Not disagreeing with that, but for a "best games of all time" list I value originality and new ideas the most (provided they are good new ideas, of course). Civ IV had a lot of great new things added to it compared to the previous games in the series, but all the core mechanics and the truly inventive ideas were present in the original.

When I say "original" I mean "not C&C 2, 3, or 4" and "not the entire franchise". If I didn't realize the Gold Edition wasn't the very first C&C released, I wouldn't have mentioned it at all.

Diablo 2,

With its interesting class design, randomized maps and loot it remains one of my most played games of all time.

diablo2u.jpg

Agreed, greatest game of all time. Since it's already been added I'll use my #2:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

In a world of stale, cookie cutter shooter games, CoD 4 absolutely revitalized the genre by adding in RPG elements. Combined with the fantastic FPS maps, excellent game mechanics, and well balanced playstyles, CoD 4 redefined how to make a great shooting game.

Hmm but there's a 100 games...maybe room for 2 in a series or at least honorable mention.

WTF guys, Baldur's Gate II! :awe:

Bladurs-Gate-II.jpg

Simply put, one of (if not THE) best true RPG of all time. There will never be another game like it. :'(

That's part of the point. Simcity 4 was basically Simcity 2000 with a fresh coat of paint (ie: updated graphics, but the mechanics were pretty much all the same).

Same with Civ.

When I point to a precursor game, I'm generally pointing at the entire lineage of them all rolled into one. Some games are obvious exceptions to this of course. But when you get a title that progresses down generations where gameplay really hasn't changed any, you may as well point to the starting point.

Agree with Kabob on COD4. It was a winning formula that they've been trying to replicate ever since, but none of the subsequent COD games have been able to live up to it IMO.

Quake1. Oh, you want me to justify this?

What do you say about Quake1? Practically the birth of competitive FPS gaming and certainly so via TCP/IP. One of the first games to make use of 3d graphics cards. One of the longest running online communities. A game engine whose code still survives in games put out today (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Quake_-_family_tree_2.svg). Also a game engine that had more revisions within Quake than outside of it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Quake_-_family_tree.svg). The birth of tcp/ip free service game browsers (qspy) - as opposed to dwango and khali. The beginning of North America's largest lan tournament - QuakeCon. The birth of machinima. The birth of rocket arena. The birth of Team Fortress. One of the most modifiable games ever made with a built in c-code language called QuakeC. The soundtrack was developed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame. It runs on everything from Dos to Solaris to Sega Saturn. The source code was released into GPL in 99.

Blah, blah, blah. I'm tired of typing. Look, good games come and go, but games that are as revolutionary as Quake was are very few and very far between. That is the reason regardless of what game I enjoy at the current moment, I will always have to recommend Quake first.

so disappointed that this was never updated. Though if it were, I fear that it would be a squad-based FPS, mostly garbage. :(

also  Star Control 2

also: Warcraft 2. easily my favorite one.
