They can release this game Spring of 2008 for all I care. Battlefield Vietnam is where it's at for me and it's due around the same time! ;)

Well if HL2 is delayed until April, or even past January I think I won't care anymore.

I have HL2 on pre-order and I will just cancel it or let it lapse. But if it does turn out that HL2 is delayed till Spring, and with Doom 3 also coming out next Spring, the only big game left this fall for PC's seems to be Unreal Tournament 2004. But this game is not even DirectX 9.0 native, so if we have to wait till next spring for full DX9 titles, that will REALLY BLOW!!

Means no PC upgrading for me, so that should make the gf happy.

What kind of crappy company doesn't do regular backups? They are lying.
You can't seriously be this stupid. Of course VALVe has copies of the source code - it isn't like the hacker deleted the code off their machines. The problem is huge portions of the network and engine code is freely available on the internet. I imagine VALVe might be rewriting portions of the code to tighten security and close holes in the program. A sort of pre-emptive strike against hacks based off the old codebase.

Once again: This is all a rumour, and until we hear anything from VALVe it will stay a rumour.

What you are implying is that it was fully of security holes and such. Why would they release it like that anyway? My point is that they are making excuses.

Ugh, you obviously never coded anything big before. Programmers take shortcuts, cause it saves time. Coding is always a battle against time. And these shortcuts are secure enough, as long as no one has the source. If someone does somehow figure how to exploit them, patches can be released. But since the source is completely laid bare, they have to scan and change everything.

One example, wallhacks - a cheat that allows you to see through walls. Gives a huge advantage in mp since it allows the cheater to see everyone. Since walls are generated clientside, any coder with the source can write a program to disable that.
